I have had a BILLY shelf from IKEA for some time, which is quite stable under normal load. However, as soon as I fill it with books and heavier items, it starts to squeak. I am curious: why do some BILLY shelves only squeak when fully loaded?

My guess is that the material or construction is under greater stress when loaded, causing the noises. But I wanted to ask the community what the real causes are. Does the problem with squeaking relate to the particleboard or backing panel quality? Or is it a matter of the fasteners, such as screws and dowels, which might shift slightly?

Perhaps there are also experiences with maintenance or modifications that can prevent the squeaking? I welcome factual explanations and tips on how to resolve this issue.

The squeaking of BILLY shelves under full load is generally caused by mechanical stresses that affect the materials and joints.

is a good description.

The particle boards can deform slightly under weight, especially if the back panel is made of thin material that is not secured. This leads to tiny movements at the connection points (screws, dowels), which cause friction noises when loaded.

Over time, the screws can loosen, making the shelf less rigid. Adjusting them and adding felt pads or lubricants at the relevant contact points can reduce the squeaking.

Interesting topic that many BILLY owners are familiar with! 🙂

Here’s my tip: The squeaking often occurs due to slight friction at the joints when the shelf is heavily loaded. This happens when the stabilization system at the back gives way or the screws have minimal play.

I made a small upgrade myself: laminated wooden strips on the sides and additionally placed small rubber pads under the screws – this dampens the vibrations and almost completely eliminates the squeaking.

Of course, the shelf doesn’t become heavy-duty, but it’s more than enough for normal use, and now I have peace while working. 😉

Exactly.

Take the shelf apart, tighten the screws, and place rubber or felt pads between the parts.

Usually, that’s enough to stop the squeaking.

I think it is important to understand that squeaking under full load can also be a sign that the load limits are being reached.

This means that the shelf is already approaching its mechanical limits in some areas, causing increased stress on the material and joints.

It’s understandable that this can be annoying, but I would also consider whether the load can be reduced somewhat before trying solutions like wedging or adding seals.

Additionally, you can contact IKEA customer service. They can sometimes provide advice on specific material or assembly issues. This way, you don’t have to deal with the problem alone and might even get a replacement solution.
