Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my IKEA BILLY shelves, specifically with the doors. After a few months of regular use, the doors are hanging unevenly, even though I carefully aligned them during assembly and tightened the screws firmly. I’m curious why this happens.
I suspect that the weight of the door or the material might play a role, but I’m not sure. Could it be due to the glue joints, the hinges, or the wood warping over time? What are the usual causes, and are there any tips on how to fix this problem permanently? I would really appreciate your experiences and explanations!

Usually, it’s because the material has settled slightly or the hinges have loosened a bit. The BILLY shelves aren’t made from solid wood, but rather particleboard with a foil veneer – this can warp slightly with changes in humidity.
My advice: simply tighten the screws on the hinges and readjust the door alignment using the hinge adjustments. You need to do this occasionally; it’s not a defect, but more of a maintenance task :-)
I’ve also read that you can gently sand the doors if they’re rubbing somewhere – but be careful!
Good luck with the screwdriving!

BILLY doors are often attached with concealed hinges that allow for specific adjustments (in depth, height, and sideways). After extended use, these screws can loosen due to vibrations or stress, causing the doors to no longer align perfectly.
Additionally, the material properties of particleboard, combined with moisture, can cause slight changes in volume, which can worsen the misalignment.
I recommend the following steps:
1. Check that the hinges and screws are securely fastened and tighten them if necessary.
2. Use the adjustment screws (three per hinge) to correct the alignment.
3. Check whether the back panel of the shelving unit is still firmly in place, as a loose back panel can cause the entire unit to twist.
Once all this has been done, the door issue should be resolved permanently.

Most of the time, it really comes down to the material settling a bit or the hinges loosening slightly. I would question that explanation. Can the 'settling' of the material actually be attributed to particleboard?
Particleboard does expand when exposed to moisture, but it doesn't settle. I believe the cause is more likely mechanical: either loose screws, poor installation, or hinges that are not suitable for the weight of the door.
Additionally, an inaccurately installed back panel can increase the twisting of the cabinet carcass, making the doors appear misaligned.
Does anyone have experience with the tolerances of IKEA furniture and whether the hinges are really designed for the door sizes? There might also be defective batches that cause these problems more quickly.

what are typical causes here and are there any tips on how to permanently fix the problem? Hi Miga49!
This is a huge topic because many people have exactly the same problem! 🙂
The important thing is: don’t get discouraged! Doors often sag or become misaligned over time, but you can always fix that! I think the hinges from IKEA are great because you can adjust the doors without having to take everything apart.
My tip: every few months, take some time to tighten the screws a bit and readjust the doors. Also, keep a small spray bottle with oil handy for the hinges to keep them moving smoothly.
If you want to put in a bit more effort: make sure the furniture piece stands perfectly level. An uneven floor or wall can warp the entire cabinet and affect the doors—that’s often underestimated!
So take a deep breath, keep at it, and keep readjusting as needed! It will work out! 🙂
