ᐅ Why do drywall screws often come loose?

Hello everyone,

Recently, I have noticed that the screws in several Malm furniture pieces tend to loosen relatively quickly, even though I usually tighten them with the recommended torque. I’m curious about the reasons behind this, as it affects the stability of the furniture.

Could it be due to material properties, the design of the joint, or perhaps the type of screw itself? Are there known weak points with Malm screws that cause them to become loose?

I’m specifically asking why Malm screws often loosen even when properly tightened, and what can be done to prevent or fix this issue.

Looking forward to your experiences and explanations.

I would like to organize my explanation a bit

Thanks for the overview! I’m curious if IKEA, especially regarding Malm, provides any guidelines or recommendations about screws and their fitting.

Does anyone have experience whether IKEA uses special types of screws, or if it’s possible to replace them with stronger, possibly more expensive screws to solve the issue permanently?

Or are there generally good replacement parts that should be preferred? That way, I could specifically look for replacements if the originals are not optimal.

I am interested to know if IKEA, specifically for Malm, provides any guidance or recommendations regarding screws and their fitting.

IKEA mainly uses connector fittings like cam locks and Minifix screws for Malm furniture, designed for easy assembly but not intended for heavy load-bearing connections.

These screws typically have wider tolerances in thread manufacturing and are not designed to withstand extremely high tensile forces over time.

One option is to replace the screws with higher-quality stainless steel screws in the appropriate size, which offer better holding strength.

However, it is important to match the screw head and thread as precisely as possible to avoid damaging the existing holes and fittings.

Pre-drilling with a slightly smaller drill bit and using wood glue or repair filler can also help if the hole is already worn out.

If the furniture will be subjected to significant stress, reinforcing the joints with brackets or sturdy additional fittings can improve stability.

Finally, many experts recommend always ensuring that the furniture stands on a solid and level surface to minimize movement and prevent screws from loosening.
