Dear forum members,

We have a waterproof concrete shell around our basement, often called a "white tank." Is there a risk of damaging its waterproof function if holes are drilled into the basement walls, for example, to install anchors? Unfortunately, I do not know at what depth certain layers begin or the exact composition of the basement wall layers. Perhaps there is an anchor depth that is generally safe for the waterproof shell.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

Hello,

There are no different layers involved. It is solid reinforced concrete throughout. As far as I know, a waterproof concrete shell (white tank) must have a minimum wall thickness of 25 cm (10 inches), because the concrete becomes truly watertight only after 24 cm (9.5 inches).

Standard anchor depths of 50–60 mm (2–2.4 inches) in typical quantities should not be a problem. At least, that’s the case for us. Since anchors hold very well in concrete, 8 mm (about 0.3 inches) anchors approximately 50 mm (2 inches) long are sufficient for virtually all applications.

Best regards,
Andreas
