Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble several IKEA Billy bookcases and am looking for tools or aids that can significantly speed up the assembly process. I am especially interested in which tools are best suited to make the build not only faster but also more efficient and precise. Are there specific cordless drills, attachments, or other tools you would recommend for quickly driving screws flush without much effort? Additionally, it would be helpful to know if using torque wrenches or other precision tools is worthwhile, or if simple hand tools are just as effective. I look forward to your tried-and-tested tips and experiences!

Are there any special cordless drills, attachments, or other tools you would recommend for quickly and easily countersinking screws? That’s a very specific question, and I believe the biggest efficiency gain really comes from choosing the right cordless drill with an adjustable torque setting. I personally use a device with variable torque control, which helps to avoid over-tightening plastic components—something that happens frequently with Billy shelves. Important: Use a high-quality Phillips bit, made from S2 steel for example, to prevent screw heads from stripping.

Also, it would be helpful to know whether using torque wrenches or other precision tools is worthwhile, or if simple hand tools work just as well.I wouldn’t recommend a torque wrench for furniture assembly because it’s usually designed for higher torque levels and could damage the smaller screws. Instead, it’s better to work carefully with the cordless drill. A handy addition might be a right-angle attachment, which makes screwing in tight spaces easier. Question: How many Billy units are you planning to assemble? For larger quantities, investing in special assembly aids such as small clamps might be worthwhile.
I can easily understand how stressful assembling several Billy shelves can be – I’ve experienced it myself. What always worked well for me was to be patient and take it step by step, without putting myself under time pressure. Using a reliable cordless drill made the process faster as well. At first, I was also worried I might be doing something wrong, but that quickly passed. Maybe it would help you to take short breaks from time to time to keep your concentration up. 🙂 Another thing that helped me was sorting all the screws into small bowls, which made it easier to keep track of everything.

A good cordless drill driver with torque control saves time and prevents over-tightening.That’s exactly the key point! I’d also add: always keep a small flashlight or headlamp handy, especially when working in corners or darker rooms—it helps a lot. For screwing, it’s best to have a set that includes not only Phillips bits but also Torx or Pozidriv bits, in case you come across different types of screws.
A little tip from me: keep the individual components well organized alongside your tools—that will save you from some frustrating moments. And if the battery runs out before you finish assembling, don’t worry—a power bank for the drill driver can work wonders. 😉 Good luck with your build!
