Hello everyone,

I am currently looking more closely into the durability of replacement parts for IKEA furniture, specifically the Brimnes system. Since this series is quite popular and has been on the market for many years, I am particularly interested in which replacement parts, based on your experience, are especially robust and long-lasting. Details about materials, workmanship, or common weak points that suggest whether certain components should be replaced or not would be helpful.

Additionally, it would be useful to know if there are parts that need to be reordered regularly and where investing in original parts pays off in the long run—that is, which parts withstand daily use best and which tend to be more prone to wear?

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hey Stefan39,

interesting question! 😊 From my experience, the dowels (the small wooden pins that hold the shelves) in Brimnes furniture are really sturdy – they can withstand a lot and rarely break. The metal hinges for the doors are also quite durable, as long as you occasionally tighten or lubricate them a bit, so they don’t squeak or stick.

However, I’ve heard that the plastic end caps on the bed frames tend to wear out more quickly. In my case, they became a bit brittle after a few years. Still, the large wooden parts and the back panels are quite tough.

So for small everyday replacement parts: dowels and hinges are key for long-lasting use.

Looking forward to hearing what others have to say! 😉

Hello Stefan39,

Your concern is understandable – durability of replacement parts is one of the few real quality aspects that can make a difference with IKEA products. Regarding Brimnes, I can add some technical details:

- The particle boards used as load-bearing elements are sturdy but susceptible to moisture; replacement is necessary after water damage.
- The metal connectors (especially the steel brackets and screws) are particularly durable – they are galvanized and corrosion-resistant.
- The hinges are of good quality and allow long-lasting use thanks to adjustable rotation.
- The so-called dowels (wooden strips / wooden dowels) are simple but can loosen over time depending on the load. It is advisable to replace them with high-quality wooden dowels that are slightly thicker and harder when ordering replacement parts.

Even more important when ordering replacement parts is the exact description and part number to ensure compatibility. Are there specific parts in your case that show wear after a short time, or are you just preparing preventively?

That’s a good question! I own several Brimnes dressers myself, and I noticed that the drawer slides tend to become stiff and sometimes get stuck after a few years. It’s frustrating because you don’t really want to have to replace them.

Unfortunately, replacement metal slides from IKEA can be somewhat tricky to obtain, and the original parts are often more expensive than third-party options—but the third-party ones don’t always fit perfectly.

Overall, it feels like the wooden shelves and sides hold up well, but mechanical components like hinges and slides require some maintenance and occasional replacement. Fortunately, IKEA offers prompt service support if you know the part numbers.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth investing in higher-quality replacement parts upfront if you want to keep the furniture for a long time.
