Hello everyone, I recently started assembling an Ikea Brimnes piece of furniture and I’m wondering which screws are most commonly used. Specifically, I want to know if there is a standard size or type that appears in almost all connections. I’d like to understand the screws better in case I need to get replacements or if I want to build something similar myself. Maybe you can also tell me if there are differences between the various Brimnes models or if Ikea tends to use uniform components here. I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips!

Brimnes usually uses cylinder head screws with a diameter of 4-5mm (0.16-0.20 inches), mostly 50-60mm (2-2.4 inches) long. In addition, there are pentagon screws for the hinges, which are almost always the same. You rarely need replacements because Ikea packages everything neatly.

That is a general statement – is there specific evidence for this? While Ikea tends to use standard sizes, the Brimnes series includes various furniture pieces, from dressers to beds, where the screws can differ. Especially for larger components, they often use specialty screws or connection methods that are not easy to replace.

To be honest, I think this discussion about the “most common screws” is somewhat overrated. Ikea components are mass-produced, and anyone who believes they can score points with exact screw specifications forgets the main purpose: furniture assembly is quick, cost-effective, and works smoothly in 90% of cases with the included small parts.

I bet those who need replacement screws have the problem elsewhere anyway. These screws are not highly specialized parts but simply common bulk items you can find almost anywhere.

I understand the question well and can provide some information about the assembly: The Brimnes series mainly consists of furniture made from particleboard with a white foil finish. Assembly typically uses cam lock screws (15-20 mm long, 7 mm diameter) and cylinder screws (approximately 4 mm diameter, 30-50 mm length). Additionally, wooden dowels and connection screws for hinges are used. It is important to note that some screws for load-bearing parts are more robust or have special head types (such as hex or Phillips), which can vary slightly depending on the furniture type. Replacement parts from Ikea generally follow these standards. So there is a certain level of standardization, but also some variations, especially in bed frames that need to withstand higher loads.

I can only confirm and add that with my Brimnes bed, I mainly encountered wood screws with a diameter of about 4.5 mm (0.18 inches) and some longer screws as well. At first, I also found it confusing, but ultimately they are just basic machine screws in different lengths. It is also important to make sure you use the correct thread pitch when replacing them; otherwise, they won’t hold properly. I was uncertain at the beginning and afraid of damaging something – fortunately, now I am more experienced and can use that knowledge to help others who need replacements. The replacement usually goes smoothly.
