Hello everyone, I have a question and would like to benefit from your experience: Which screws are actually more durable than the original ones used in Billy shelves?

Lately, I have noticed that especially the screws in the carcass and shelves tend to loosen quickly or even rust, which is particularly problematic in rooms with higher humidity. It is important for me that replacement screws not only hold better but are ideally made from a material that is more resistant to corrosion.

Do you have recommendations for screw types or manufacturers that have proven reliable? Perhaps also specific sizes or thread types that work better than the originals?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

I completely understand, as I’ve experienced this myself, especially when you move the parts around more often or subject them to different stresses. I have found stainless steel screws to be very durable, particularly those made of A2 or A4 stainless steel. They are not only rust-resistant but also maintain their shape much longer.

However, there are differences in the surface quality, and not every stainless steel screw will last forever if it’s not of good quality. I’ve had good experiences with branded products sold at hardware stores that come with certified stainless steel.

How do you handle screw locking? Do you use washers or thread lockers? Often, that helps more than just using better materials.

Several factors determine the durability of screws for BILLY shelves: material quality, surface treatment, and thread type.

Original screws are usually zinc-plated, providing basic corrosion protection, but the zinc coating can wear off in moist conditions.

A4 stainless steel screws (V4A) offer the best corrosion resistance but are more expensive. A2 screws are more affordable and sufficient for indoor use without direct exposure to moisture.

For load capacity, I also recommend fine-thread screws, as they are less likely to strip or damage the material.

In summary: A4 stainless steel screws with fine threads, combined with appropriate washers, are significantly more durable than the original BILLY screws.

Stainless steel screws A4 + spring washers = better durability. It's that simple.

That's correct. I have been using only A4 screws for years when it comes to furniture, especially for BILLY shelves in basements or living rooms with higher humidity.

This is a very good tip. I would like to add that I personally also use thread-locking fluid or a small amount of thread-locking paste, especially for applications under heavy load.

This way, you can be sure that nothing will loosen easily. My shelves often carry heavy loads, and the connections remain stable for years.
