maratliHello everyone,
lately, I have been doing some minor repairs on my IKEA Besta system, especially on the cabinet doors and shelves, where screws often become loose or even get lost. Therefore, I am particularly interested in which screw sets you recommend for repairing Besta furniture.
I am looking for advice on the following points:
- Which types of screws (for example, particle board screws, hex bolts, or specialized furniture connectors) are best suited to ensure stability?
- Are there sets that work well for different parts of the Besta system and are therefore versatile?
- What diameter and length should the screws ideally have to hold securely without damaging the furniture?
- Do you have any tips on quality features to look for when purchasing such screw sets, so that they last long and don’t require rework?
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations because this time I really want to use the optimal screws to avoid constant repairs.

My concerns are as follows:To address your questions directly: For IKEA Besta repairs, it’s advisable to use high-quality chipboard screws with a diameter of about 4 mm (0.16 inches) and a length between 30 and 40 mm (1.2 and 1.6 inches). These are long enough to provide a secure hold in the often thin panels without causing damage.
For the furniture connectors themselves (usually cam locks or cam connectors), you should use the original parts or compatible replacements, since their thread design is specifically tailored to the furniture.
A commonly recommended set includes:
- Chipboard screws M4 x 30–40 mm (0.16 inches x 1.2–1.6 inches)
- Cam lock connectors with matching screws (usually 15–20 mm / 0.6–0.8 inches)
- Mounting screws for fittings (hinge screws, typically 15 mm / 0.6 inches)
Make sure to choose nickel-plated or zinc-coated finishes to prevent corrosion, and look for countersunk heads for flush installation.
I recommend quality brands like Spax or Fischer, which offer good value at a high quality level. Cheap screws tend to strip or break easily, which can be problematic especially during repairs.
If you have more specific details about a particular repair case, I’d be happy to provide more targeted advice.

In my opinion, it’s really worth spending a bit more on quality when repairing favorite furniture. Otherwise, you soon run into new problems and get annoyed by unstable joints.
How about you? Have you experienced that low-quality screws unnecessarily complicated repairs? And how do you handle those situations?
I’m also curious whether it’s recommended to buy replacement screws directly from IKEA, or if that is often too expensive or inconvenient.
