Hello everyone,
I am looking for specialized information on the topic: Which materials are suitable for IKEA Brimnes shelves?
My goal is to find out which materials, surface coatings, or additional materials are best for building, modifying, or using Brimnes shelves to ensure stability, durability, and aesthetics.
I am particularly interested in whether it is advisable to use custom shelves made from other materials, what load limits should be observed, and if special factors such as moisture or type of load influence the choice of materials.
It would be very helpful if the recommendations could also include experiences with the Brimnes system, as this series has a specific construction using medium-density fiberboard.
Thank you in advance for all well-founded advice!

Regarding the dimensions and material thicknesses of the Brimnes system:
- Original shelves are usually made from 16 mm (5/8 inch) thick MDF with a melamine coating. This thickness ensures the required load capacity and compatibility with dowel holes.
- Using thinner panels reduces the load-bearing capacity and stability of the shelf, which can lead to unsafe use.
- For improved durability, I recommend using water-resistant MDF (HDF) or coated plywood, especially if the shelf is located in areas with high humidity.
- The holes for the shelf supports should be drilled precisely using a drilling template; otherwise, the brackets often do not fit.
If opting for prefabricated cuttings, be sure to specify the drilling or adjust it carefully yourself.

Multiplex plywood also works, but please make sure the thickness is similar.
I would avoid other materials. Otherwise, the drilling holes won’t match, and you may have problems later.

I personally replaced the shelves in the Brimnes shelving unit using 16 mm (5/8 inch) plywood – it looked great and held very firmly!
A small tip: If you experiment, make sure the surface is smooth and well sealed, otherwise the material can absorb moisture and swell.
Don’t be discouraged by that – you can definitely do it! The Brimnes shelving unit responds really well when you adjust the materials.
