Hello everyone,

I am looking for specialized information on the topic: Which materials are suitable for IKEA Brimnes shelves?

My goal is to find out which materials, surface coatings, or additional materials are best for building, modifying, or using Brimnes shelves to ensure stability, durability, and aesthetics.

I am particularly interested in whether it is advisable to use custom shelves made from other materials, what load limits should be observed, and if special factors such as moisture or type of load influence the choice of materials.

It would be very helpful if the recommendations could also include experiences with the Brimnes system, as this series has a specific construction using medium-density fiberboard.

Thank you in advance for all well-founded advice!

To clarify which materials are suitable for IKEA Brimnes shelves, it is important to understand that Brimnes components are primarily made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a melamine resin coating.

For replacement or additional shelves, MDF or plywood with an appropriate surface finish is generally recommended to maintain stability and appearance.

It is important to consider the load capacity: standard Brimnes shelves are usually designed to support up to 15 kg (33 lbs) per compartment. Changing the material to solid wood, for example, without adjusting the construction may result in tipping or breakage risks.

An alternative option is sturdy shelves made from durable plastic or coated plywood, which offer advantages in moisture-prone environments; however, the compatibility of drill holes should be checked.

I would like to provide a brief guide on how to create custom-fit additional shelves for the Brimnes shelving unit:

- Step 1: Measure the interior width and depth of the shelf, as dimensions can vary slightly.
- Step 2: Choose the material, for example, MDF with a melamine coating to maintain the original appearance. For increased moisture resistance, water-resistant chipboard or plywood is recommended.
- Step 3: Have the material cut to exact dimensions by a wood cutting service or workshop.
- Step 4: Apply edge banding or seal the edges to prevent swelling.
- Step 5: Select appropriate drill holes for dowels and brackets, as the Brimnes system uses specific mounting hardware.

Common mistakes include inaccurate measurements or omitting edge sealing, which can lead to swelling and warping.

In summary: choose MDF or plywood as close as possible to the original quality and work carefully.

Exactly, that’s the key point. Especially the melamine coating provides a smooth, moisture-resistant surface, which is often missing in other materials.

For self-building, MDF or veneered chipboard panels are the most suitable. Solid wood looks more premium but can cause issues with fastening due to the greater material thickness and weight.

Regarding load capacity: It is advisable not to exceed the manufacturer’s specified weight limits, otherwise the shelf’s structural integrity can be compromised—this is particularly important for custom-adjusted shelves.

For damp areas, special plastics or water-resistant panels are recommended, as the original material is only limitedly moisture-resistant.

For the shelves in the Brimnes system, I recommend MDF boards with a melamine coating, as these fit best within the system and are stable.

Other materials like plywood or solid wood do not fit well because the drilling patterns and thicknesses are different.

The material should not exceed a load capacity of about 15 kg (33 lbs).

Thanks for the tip! That explains some issues I had with custom-made shelves.

I’m also curious if certain thicknesses or surface treatments of the recommended MDF or plywood panels are particularly beneficial.

Additionally, are there products that work especially well with the original Brimnes fastening system, or are adjustments to the dowel holes often necessary?

I would appreciate it if someone could share their experience.
