Hello everyone,
I am planning to equip my IKEA BESTÅ shelves with LED lighting and would like to know which LED lighting systems work best with this series. Important factors for me are easy installation on the shelves, good light distribution inside, color rendering, and of course compatibility with the modular design of the BESTÅ system.
I’m also interested in whether it is better to use fixed LED strips or flexible LED tape, and whether power supply via USB, power adapter, or batteries is more practical.
Additionally, it would be helpful to hear about experiences with specific brands or kits that are particularly suitable for lighting furniture and shelving. Are there any smart solutions that work well with BESTÅ?
I look forward to tips, recommendations, and also advice on potential pitfalls during installation!
Thank you in advance.

Great question, the BESTÅ shelves are really fantastic furniture! 😍 I would recommend flexible LED strips – because they can adapt to all kinds of corners and edges.I agree, flexible LED strips fit best with the different modules. At first, I was unsure about the installation. But after trying it, it was much easier than expected.

Typical mistakes are neglecting the measurements (LED strips too long/short) and insufficient wiring capacity. That was almost my biggest stumbling block. I didn’t have enough length and had to fix it afterwards. It’s really worth measuring carefully beforehand and buying a few centimeters (inches) extra.
I understand well how overwhelming the topic can be. Hopefully, this gives you some confidence to give the installation a try!
Jankora, a tip from me: When purchasing LED lighting, make sure the strips are dimmable and compatible with your existing control system (e.g., standard switches, remote control, app, or voice control).
I have installed dimmable LED strips in BESTÅ shelves myself – it really makes a difference when you want a cozy light in the evening.
Smart solutions are great, but non-smart LEDs with simple controls and good brightness are perfectly fine if you prefer less technical complexity.

Smart solutions are great, but non-smart LEDs with simple operation and good brightness are completely sufficient,That’s true – I was uncertain for a long time whether to get smart solutions or just straightforward LEDs.
In the end, I chose simple LED strips that can be switched on with a regular switch, avoiding the hassle of smart controls. It works perfectly for me, and I save myself from dealing with apps or Wi-Fi setup.
What was important to me was easy retrofitting and the possibility to expand or adjust the lighting later on. That’s why I recommend LED systems with modular extensions and optional plug connections.
