Hello everyone, I am currently planning the design of my small kitchen and am particularly interested in the Ikea Metod furniture range. Since my space is very limited, I have the question: Which Ikea Metod units are specifically designed for small kitchens? I am especially interested in compact, functional furniture that fits well into small spaces—whether special cabinet formats, dimensions, corner solutions, or specific storage systems offered by Ikea under the Metod range. If anyone has experience or tips on which units work best, that would be very helpful!

Very interesting questions and the answers so far. I would like to go into more detail:

The Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets are modular, which is often underestimated in small kitchens. In addition to the 40 cm (16 inches) wide base cabinets, there are also filler pieces designed specifically to fit non-standard spaces. It is important, especially in small kitchens, not to assume a standard depth of 60 cm (24 inches) for the cabinets, but rather to consider the 37 cm (15 inches) option for the wall cabinets.

When choosing the countertop, you also need to pay attention to the thickness, as countertops that are too thick can obstruct narrow pathways. The height of the cabinets is also crucial: the standard is 80 cm (31.5 inches) base cabinet height plus the countertop, but there are low-profile options that can adapt better to smaller spaces.

A tip: Ikea also offers integrated lighting solutions for Metod (LED strips), which can create a sense of spaciousness.

Finally, if you have space under the window, you can use shallower base cabinets there or even create a seating area with storage.

I am also curious if you have any size requirements for the height of the wall cabinets?

I can fully understand how challenging small kitchens can be. Especially with Ikea Metod, I have found it helpful to consider personal habits as well: cooking, storage, and which appliances you use. The narrow 40cm (16 inch) cabinets are great, but without efficient internal organization, their advantages diminish.

I would also recommend discussing the exact measurements openly with Ikea staff or using planning tools and double-checking dimensions before placing an order. Some of my friends have left furniture unused in their small kitchens after initial mistakes because of lack of storage space and poor accessibility, which caused frustration.

Be bold with customization: the simple shelves in Metod can be replaced with internal pull-outs from the accessories range. This way, you can quickly reach what’s stored at the back, even in small cabinets.

Interesting thread! However, I think the general hype around Ikea Metod for small kitchens is somewhat overrated. Sure, 40cm (16 inches) cabinets and corner solutions are nice, but nowadays many other manufacturers offer more efficient and higher-quality solutions specifically for small spaces, often with better materials and more durable technology.

Just because Ikea provides standardized and affordable options doesn’t mean it’s always the best choice, especially for small kitchens. Sometimes less modularity but higher quality and thoughtful design make more sense.

Of course, Metod is attractive due to its modularity, but if you really want to maximize small spaces, you should also consider other systems. Especially when it comes to storage efficiency and ergonomic details.

Does anyone here have specific comparative experience with other kitchen manufacturers for small spaces?
