Hello everyone, I am currently planning the design of my small kitchen and am particularly interested in the Ikea Metod furniture range. Since my space is very limited, I have the question: Which Ikea Metod units are specifically designed for small kitchens? I am especially interested in compact, functional furniture that fits well into small spaces—whether special cabinet formats, dimensions, corner solutions, or specific storage systems offered by Ikea under the Metod range. If anyone has experience or tips on which units work best, that would be very helpful!

Hello Zarartur44,

a very good question! Ikea’s Metod system indeed includes several furniture pieces and accessories that work well for small kitchens. Here is a structured overview:

- Base cabinets with 40 cm (16 inches) width: The standard is usually 60 cm (24 inches), but 40 cm (16 inches) width is ideal for narrow spaces.
- Corner base cabinets: Especially the so-called "Magic Corner" corner solutions make optimal use of the space.
- Wall cabinets with smaller heights: The standard is often 80 cm (31 inches) high, but there are also 40 cm (16 inches) and 60 cm (24 inches) high versions for lower ceiling heights.
- Wall cabinets with lift-up doors instead of swing doors can save space.
- Drawer inserts and internal drawers: For optimal organization to really utilize the storage space.

A common mistake is to uncritically accept standard dimensions, which in small kitchens often leads to wasted space. Therefore, careful planning with the flexible Metod sub-dimensions is advisable. The Ikea kitchen planning software offers many options here.

I hope this helps you for now!

In addition to Nabla64, I would like to point out the following:

- The fronts and color schemes can visually enlarge the space – light colors are advantageous here.
- The 40cm (16 inches) wide base cabinets are narrow and therefore offer less storage space, so you should consider additional shelves or wall cabinets.
- Ikea also offers special cabinets with swing doors or sliding doors, which are useful in narrow hallways or small kitchens.

Overall, the flexibility of Metod is very good; it is important to take precise measurements and plan according to those dimensions.

To thoroughly explore this topic, I want to focus on the technical details of planning small kitchens with Metod:

- Cabinet widths are very flexible (20 cm (8 inches), 40 cm (16 inches), 60 cm (24 inches), etc.), with smaller units like 20 cm (8 inches) or 40 cm (16 inches) being especially suitable for gaps and narrow spaces.
- Corner cabinets: There are both pull-out hinge solutions (Magic Corner) and carousel inserts. The Magic Corner uses space much more efficiently but can be more challenging to install.
- Cabinet depth: The standard is usually 60 cm (24 inches), but in small kitchens, you can also choose 37 cm (15 inches) deep wall cabinets, which allow for more room to move around.
- Interior fittings: Well-designed inner pull-outs, pantry cabinets, or multi-level drawer inserts help maximize storage space.

It is important to consider the exact room measurements as well as door and window openings before purchasing. Careful planning with the technical specifications of Ikea Metod prevents buying mistakes and avoids unnecessarily restricting the space.

I’m curious, how large is your kitchen exactly, and are there any windows or radiators that influence where the furniture can be placed?

Good question: The kitchen is about 2.5 meters (8 feet 2 inches) long and 1.8 meters (5 feet 11 inches) wide, so it’s quite compact. The ceiling height is standard, around 2.5 meters (8 feet 2 inches). There are windows, but they are rather small and positioned high, so there is practically free countertop space underneath them. There is a radiator on one wall, where I don’t want to place any furniture directly in front. It is also important that the walkway between the base cabinets and the opposite sideboard remains at least 80 centimeters (31 inches) wide to allow comfortable movement.

For a kitchen this small, I recommend:

- Using 40cm (16 inches) wide base cabinets.
- Corner cabinets with a magic corner mechanism to save space.
- Wall cabinets with a reduced depth of 37cm (15 inches).
- Open shelves as an addition below the window.

This way, you can create plenty of storage without overwhelming the space.
