Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my kitchen using IKEA Metod cabinets and facing the challenge of accommodating additional device connections (network, power, water, possibly HDMI) inside one or more cabinets. My question is: Which IKEA Metod cabinets are best suited for easily and sensibly integrating these extra connections without compromising the existing structure or requiring unnecessary modifications?

I am particularly interested in cabinets that, due to their design, offer enough space or special compartments for cable management and where it is easy to create openings for cables and sockets. It would also be helpful if you have experience with which cabinets are better regarding material thickness, internal layout, and back panels, as I want to save myself a lot of work.

I look forward to your opinions, tips, and experiences, especially if anyone has already installed device connections in Metod cabinets. Thanks in advance!

Are there specific requirements regarding the devices you want to connect? Just power, or also water, LAN, HDMI, etc.?

Thank you for the input, Danial. Specifically, I am initially focusing on power and network connections, with optional HDMI if possible. Water connections would mainly be for a small additional space inside the tall cabinet intended as a coffee machine station – which likely presents greater challenges. It is important to me that the cabinet provides enough room for the wiring and that the back panel can be properly modified for custom cutouts.

I am aware of professional alternatives to the METOD system, but those would go beyond the scope since I live in a rented apartment and prefer more flexible solutions. Therefore, I am looking for a practical combination of IKEA standard and pragmatic modifications.

For your needs, I primarily recommend the Metod tall cabinets measuring 60cm x 60cm (24 inches x 24 inches). They offer enough volume, and the back panels can be easily adjusted. The 80cm (31.5 inches) wide base cabinets are also suitable. Important: It is better to make holes or cutouts on the outer sides or the back panel to maintain stability.

To add some detail and be specific: For installing additional appliance connections in IKEA METOD cabinets, base cabinets with a width of 80 cm (31.5 inches) and tall cabinets with a 60–60 configuration are particularly recommended.

These models offer sufficient interior space and a sturdy back panel that can be modified using appropriate tools (e.g., hole saws for cable openings). The thickness of the back panels (approximately 3–5 mm (0.12–0.2 inches)) allows for cutouts without significant loss of stability if planned carefully.

Since electrical wiring requires adequate ventilation and separation from water-carrying pipes, it is advisable to use compartments sized specifically for electrical appliances, ideally with metal brackets to mount power strips or connection boxes.

For installations sensitive to moisture (e.g., water connections), care should be taken to either replace the back panels with water-resistant materials or at least apply a protective film or layer.

In conclusion: The flexible arrangement of shelves inside the cabinets allows for accommodating a wide variety of appliance combinations, provided measurements are taken carefully and cable routing is well planned.

In summary:

- IKEA METOD cabinets with solid, non-perforated back panels are best suited for customized connection adaptations.
- Tall cabinets with variable interior layouts offer flexibility for installing appliances and their connection components.
- Back panels should be equipped with moisture protection if water connections are involved.
- Wider models (base cabinets from 80 cm (31.5 inches), tall cabinets 60 cm (23.6 inches)) provide more usable interior space for cable management.
- Careful planning of cable routing and ventilation prevents later issues with overheating or moisture.

Important: The material properties of METOD are generally not designed for electrical installations. Therefore, it is recommended to enhance critical areas with certified plastic or metal panels.

I suggest verifying the exact dimensions of the appliances on site to plan individual cutouts.
