Hello,

I need help choosing the right flooring.

We are looking for the right flooring for our new build, for the upper floor and attic.

We will have underfloor heating installed throughout the ground floor, upper floor, and attic.

On the ground floor, we will have tiles laid everywhere.

What flooring would you recommend for the upper floor and attic?
We definitely want to install the flooring ourselves (to save costs).
Our budget is around 35€/m² (approximately $37/m²).

I have researched but got overwhelmed by the wide range of flooring types available.

Laminate and vinyl are the classic options for affordable flooring.

Hardwood flooring is probably too expensive for us; we won’t manage with a maximum of 35€/m².

What are bio-based floors, luxury vinyl tiles/planks (LVT), or cork flooring?

Which wear rating should we choose if the floor needs to be as durable as possible?
Should you always go for the highest wear rating?

We also have a dog (in case that’s relevant for the selection).

I hope you can help me.

These are marketing terms that can mean a variety of things. It’s best to avoid them and instead focus on what is actually behind these labels.

There is already a detailed discussion on this topic here:

Cork is natural, while bio and design floors are made of plastic, usually PVC (with plasticizers). There are also linoleum and bamboo parquet options; bamboo (fiber) is more affordable than wood. Otherwise, try using the forum search, as this topic is discussed quite often.

I know "design floor" as a term for vinyl and a type of printed tile. I understand "bio floor" as a marketing term for linoleum.
But this just confirms my earlier point that it’s better to ignore such terms.

Thank you for your answers.

Which type of flooring would you recommend for us?

I wasn’t familiar with cork and it looks a bit unusual.

I think design floors are the same as vinyl, just a different name and maybe a different pattern on top.
Bio floors are probably similar to vinyl but without PVC and plasticizers.

I’m quite confused about parquet.
What do the following terms mean: engineered parquet, veneer parquet?
What type of parquet would you recommend? We would like to install the flooring as a floating floor with a click system. Is that advisable for parquet as well?

Which manufacturers do you recommend for laminate, vinyl, or parquet?

HARO or Parador are probably great and recommendable, right? Are there other good and reliable brands?

Which car should I buy?

Sorry, but that’s something you need to decide for yourself—what you like, feel comfortable with, and are confident you can install yourself.
