Hello,

I need help choosing the right flooring.

We are looking for the right flooring for our new build, for the upper floor and attic.

We will have underfloor heating installed throughout the ground floor, upper floor, and attic.

On the ground floor, we will have tiles laid everywhere.

What flooring would you recommend for the upper floor and attic?
We definitely want to install the flooring ourselves (to save costs).
Our budget is around 35€/m² (approximately $37/m²).

I have researched but got overwhelmed by the wide range of flooring types available.

Laminate and vinyl are the classic options for affordable flooring.

Hardwood flooring is probably too expensive for us; we won’t manage with a maximum of 35€/m².

What are bio-based floors, luxury vinyl tiles/planks (LVT), or cork flooring?

Which wear rating should we choose if the floor needs to be as durable as possible?
Should you always go for the highest wear rating?

We also have a dog (in case that’s relevant for the selection).

I hope you can help me.

I looked for it last year as well, but unfortunately, it was significantly more expensive than oak parquet.
For us, 8 years ago, it was half the price. We paid less than 30€/m² (less than $30 per square meter).

Can you say what advantages bamboo parquet has compared to regular parquet? Can you also give a tip on where to find it cheaply, for example in a store?
Is bamboo parquet always lacquered?
Advantages: it is considerably harder and cheaper 😉
When I search online, I can no longer find the website where we bought it. Shops come and go...
The shops that appear on Google when searching for words like
Bamboo and shop
or
Parquet and sale
look visually similar to the shop where we bought the parquet... Prices start at 40€/m² (about $40 per square meter), but are usually closer to 50€/m² (about $50 per square meter)... 😕

Yes, I also found prices around 50 euros. And unfortunately, that is significantly more expensive than parquet.

Our dog is more than 10 kg (22 lbs) lighter. After over 4 years in the house, I can say: the vinyl flooring shows no damage from him. The only marks he leaves are paw prints when the garden is wet. But those can be easily cleaned off. It’s quite different with the wood areas: the staircase with laminated oak steps.

That would already speak in favor of vinyl.

We are getting lacquered beech for the stair treads.

@ypg currently the prices are around 50€ for bamboo parquet, which is really more expensive than regular hardwood flooring.

I have only found lacquered bamboo parquet as well. Also, the appearance is not quite as nice as real wood (takes some getting used to).

Right now, vinyl and parquet are the main options under consideration.

Yes, it is different. However, nowhere does it say you are looking for a wood texture.
For someone basically looking for a nice flooring for their home, this provides a natural, durable, warm floor covering that can be installed as a DIY project.
And for someone who wants something a bit different from the rest and also values the ecological aspect, it can be more expensive than mainstream oak.
If you don’t like it, then it’s simply not suitable for you 🙂

We took a look at the flooring options on site.

Our current favorite is vinyl.

Hardwood flooring is basically off the table. I have read, and it was also mentioned on site, that dog claws can easily scratch hardwood, and that it can discolor when it comes into contact with urine (especially oak).

Laminate has a very smooth surface where dogs can easily slip, but it is durable. Due to its hard surface, walking noises are quite loud, especially from dog claws.

Vinyl, on the other hand, is quiet to walk on, always feels warm underfoot, and is comfortable. Vinyl is also said to be joint-friendly because it has a softer surface. It is still resistant to scratches, water, and urine; not much can harm it.

Before the topic of urine arises—if you have a dog, you know accidents can happen, whether the dog is still a puppy, very old, or has an illness (e.g., a bladder infection). It can simply occur occasionally (even if not often), but you still don’t want a dark stain on hardwood just because it happened once.

We were not able to check cork flooring; we will need to visit another store for that.

Great, now we're on the right track. It only took 11 pages and 65 posts... 😉 Now we just need to convince you that bonding it down is really better than floating installation.
