Hello,
I need help choosing the right flooring.
We are looking for the right flooring for our new build, for the upper floor and attic.
We will have underfloor heating installed throughout the ground floor, upper floor, and attic.
On the ground floor, we will have tiles laid everywhere.
What flooring would you recommend for the upper floor and attic?
We definitely want to install the flooring ourselves (to save costs).
Our budget is around 35€/m² (approximately $37/m²).
I have researched but got overwhelmed by the wide range of flooring types available.
Laminate and vinyl are the classic options for affordable flooring.
Hardwood flooring is probably too expensive for us; we won’t manage with a maximum of 35€/m².
What are bio-based floors, luxury vinyl tiles/planks (LVT), or cork flooring?
Which wear rating should we choose if the floor needs to be as durable as possible?
Should you always go for the highest wear rating?
We also have a dog (in case that’s relevant for the selection).
I hope you can help me.

A play rug like that
Yes, exactly.
A smooth floor that is easy to clean, with a rug on top for a soft feeling underfoot.
The downside is the tripping edge, but overall it is the more flexible solution.

Thank you very much for the many responses.
Carpet is completely out for us; it’s no longer modern and also not hygienic.
@ypg I haven’t been able to find any affordable bamboo parquet quickly.
Bamboo parquet also looks a bit unusual (but it’s not completely ruled out).
Can you tell me what advantages bamboo parquet has over regular hardwood flooring? Could you also give a tip where to find it cheaply, for example a store?
Is bamboo parquet always lacquered?
We have a relatively large dog, about 45 kg (99 lbs).
Of course, we don’t want scratches on the floor from running or playing, so I’m looking for a floor that is quite durable.
The child should also not scratch the floor too easily (completely avoiding scratches is impossible anyway).
Honestly, I’m overwhelmed by the many different types of parquet (without studying it, nobody really understands all of it 😀).
@DeepRed Yes, rigid vinyl is also an option.
If vinyl is the better choice for us, I’d like to check which vinyl is best: the regular kind with impact sound insulation or rigid vinyl.
Does the impact sound insulation possibly compensate for unevenness in the screed (dents or bumps) better than rigid vinyl?
I’m not really opposed to plastic flooring as long as it’s not harmful to health or has other negative points.
If vinyl is the best option for us based on its properties, it wouldn’t be ruled out just because it’s plastic.

Plastics – no matter where they come from – will eventually end up in the ocean. If you think 100 or 200 years ahead, this becomes clear.
Of course, I also use plastics ... I drive a car and a bike ... but whenever I can avoid it, I do.
