Hello,
I need help choosing the right flooring.
We are looking for the right flooring for our new build, for the upper floor and attic.
We will have underfloor heating installed throughout the ground floor, upper floor, and attic.
On the ground floor, we will have tiles laid everywhere.
What flooring would you recommend for the upper floor and attic?
We definitely want to install the flooring ourselves (to save costs).
Our budget is around 35€/m² (approximately $37/m²).
I have researched but got overwhelmed by the wide range of flooring types available.
Laminate and vinyl are the classic options for affordable flooring.
Hardwood flooring is probably too expensive for us; we won’t manage with a maximum of 35€/m².
What are bio-based floors, luxury vinyl tiles/planks (LVT), or cork flooring?
Which wear rating should we choose if the floor needs to be as durable as possible?
Should you always go for the highest wear rating?
We also have a dog (in case that’s relevant for the selection).
I hope you can help me.

Then you should glue it down. And in that case, vinyl or hardwood flooring would be better. I suspected as much. Our current cheap laminate flooring is really noisy, especially when the dog is walking on it.
We can still hear the dog three rooms away when it’s moving around.
So we’re focusing on vinyl or hardwood flooring. (Probably nothing else fits the budget.)
What do you think about the hardwood flooring manufacturer Parador?
I’ve browsed through almost all the shops, and the cheapest hardwood seems to be either from Parador or Hori. Does the price reflect the quality, or do they offer a good value for money?
Which other manufacturers can you recommend based on your experience with hardwood flooring?

Costruttrice8 Nov 2022 15:49We recently went shopping for parquet flooring, and during that, we discussed price trends with the seller. He mentioned that the price for luxury vinyl flooring has decreased recently and is expected to continue falling. He quoted prices currently around 38€ per square meter (about $4 per square foot) for Meister wide-plank floors. So your price of 35€ per square meter (about $3.25 per square foot) isn’t too far off.
I can’t say anything about the luxury vinyl flooring or the manufacturer themselves, as I haven’t looked into that.

The installation costs exceed the price of the flooring material. Of course they do. Sanding – priming – floor leveling/filling – sanding – gluing. In our case, excluding the flooring material but including all other supplies (adhesive, filler, etc.), it’s also 43€ gross. Vinyl costs just under 20€ per m² (roughly 2.8 sq ft) after some negotiation. And I’ve already done thorough comparisons. I’ve seen quotes here (including flooring) of 110€ per m² (around 10 sq ft).
You want to outsource the painting work, right? Could you ask the painter if they can get favorable purchasing conditions for click vinyl? The local trade store should be able to offer something in the 30-35€ per m² (about 3.1-3.3 sq ft) range. It probably won’t be perfect, but at least it would fit the budget.
What I would have liked to install over our underfloor heating is concrete. Nowadays, there are many manufacturers producing cement-based materials specifically designed for this purpose.
My recommendation is: Sven Backstein.
Mineral-based materials are the most suitable for underfloor heating. The covering should insulate as little as possible and conduct heat as well as possible.
It may be that the above recommendation is more expensive than you have planned, but for projects like this, I think you should reconsider your priorities and see if other things can be done more cheaply or even omitted.
The floor is what you stand on.
