Hello everyone, I have a question and would like to benefit from your experience and expertise: What factors increase the lifespan of BILLY?
I am particularly interested in which aspects of care, assembly, and use play a role in maintaining its functionality and appearance over time. Are there any specific tips regarding weight limits and moisture that should definitely be considered?
I would appreciate it if you could share your insights, tricks, or possible pitfalls—ideally practical recommendations that apply not only to new products but also to older models. Thank you!

What factors increase the lifespan of BILLY?Haha, a very important question – the classic BILLY shelf can really last a long time if you keep a few things in mind! 🙂
For example: always make sure not to overload the shelf! Of course, the shelves can hold quite a bit, but constantly exceeding the limit will quickly lead to squeaky or sagging shelves.
Also, moisture can be the biggest enemy! I would recommend not placing BILLY in damp basements. It’s better to keep it in a dry spot because otherwise the boards will swell and the finish will become brittle.
And last but not least: wipe it down with a damp cloth every few months to avoid dust – this protects the surfaces. Oh, and regularly tighten the screws; that makes the whole thing more stable.
Just a little care for your shelf, and BILLY will last forever 😄
I would like to add a focus on the following factors for significantly extending the lifespan of BILLY:
1. Proper assembly: Screws should be fully tightened without over-tightening to avoid damage to the material.
2. Load limits: Individual shelves can support a maximum of 13-30 kg (29-66 lbs), depending on length and design. Uneven weight distribution can cause deformation.
3. Environmental climate: Optimal relative humidity is about 40-60%. Extreme fluctuations or consistently high humidity negatively affect the wood material.
4. Maintenance: Regular cleaning with mild detergents; avoid aggressive solvents.
5. Using floor protectors under standing shelves promotes stability and prevents moisture damage from the floor.
These combined measures are scientifically based and result from material testing and long-term experience.

Which factors increase the lifespan of BILLY?Hello, I’m happy to add some thoughts since I also have this shelving unit:
It is especially important to attach the unit to the wall, as the instructions recommend. Many people underestimate this step, but it significantly improves stability and prevents tipping, which can cause damage.
Additionally, you should check the floor before assembly. An uneven surface can cause the unit to lean, creating stress and accelerating material fatigue.
I also think it’s best to distribute weight evenly across the shelves, storing heavier books at the bottom and lighter items on top; this protects the material and enhances stability.
By combining these measures, you can really enjoy BILLY for a long time!

Regularly retighten screwsDefinitely, especially with newer shelves.
Avoid moisture, secure wall fastenings, distribute weight properly – all excellent points.
