Hello everyone, I recently bought some furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series and now I would like to enhance my apartment with DIY decoration ideas that match this series particularly well. Hemnes furniture has a classic, somewhat rustic, country-style look with visible wood grain and a rustic white or natural wood finish. I am interested in which homemade or custom-designed decorative elements you would recommend to complement or emphasize this style – for example, regarding colors, materials, crafts such as knitting, crocheting, woodworking, or other techniques. Are there any special combinations or styles you have found work really well with Hemnes? Thank you in advance for your suggestions and tips!

In general, I recommend focusing on natural materials and muted colors for DIY decor with the Ikea Hemnes series, which is known for its classic and somewhat rustic design. Wooden decorative items in light or untreated wood tones work best, as they complement the furniture’s grain without creating too much contrast. Accessories made of cotton or linen in cream, beige, and gray shades also pair well with Hemnes. An effective DIY idea is making fabric baskets or covers yourself, which can be placed on sideboards or shelves. These can also be decorated with embroidery or crochet accents. Plant pots made of clay or glass with small succulents or ferns help to enhance the overall natural feel. It is important to avoid too many shiny or bright accents in order to maintain the calm atmosphere.

Oh, this is a great topic! Ikea Hemnes really calls for coziness and a bit of "homemade charm." For DIY decor, you could, for example, build rustic wooden crates or small ladder shelves yourself, which you can then use as plant stands for your green beauties. Handmade pillows with linen fabric and simple embroidery patterns also work very well with the Hemnes style – this adds some textile comfort and makes the space wonderfully cozy. And for those who are interested, candle holders made from branches or DIY lamps wrapped with jute twine help maintain the natural, slightly rustic atmosphere. Don’t worry about mixing styles, just don’t go overboard – Hemnes is classic but still open to a personal touch.

I agree with that. It’s also worth noting that Hemnes furniture, with its finish and wood grain, visually conveys a certain sturdiness. Therefore, DIY decorations that reflect and enhance this quality work best, such as knitted throws or macrame wall hangings in subtle tones that add both texture and warmth. Simple, homemade wooden frames with photos or drawings also fit perfectly, as they support the traditional look. Another tip is using ceramic vases with a natural finish, which are easy to customize with DIY techniques.

My recommendation: Handmade macrame wall hangings in natural colors go very well with Hemnes furniture, as do small wooden boxes for storage. Plants in terracotta pots complete the overall look.

I completely agree. Additionally, I would suggest using matte-finish varnishes or oils for DIY wood projects to maintain the rustic look. Handmade candle holders made of wood or metal can create accents but should be used sparingly to preserve the typical simplicity of Hemnes.

That’s exactly right. Authenticity through handmade items works especially well with Hemnes. The plain design doesn’t need any overly elaborate elements.
