tanfiHello everyone,
I recently bought some furniture with BILLY wood veneer surfaces and want to take the best possible care of them to preserve the finish in the long term. Therefore, I would like to know: Which care products are especially recommended for BILLY wood veneer surfaces? I am particularly interested in advice on whether to use specific oils, waxes, or cleaning agents to maintain the wood character while also providing protection against moisture or wear.
I have already looked at some products but am unsure which are best suited for the veneer of BILLY shelves since these are usually not solid wood. I would really appreciate any experiences shared by the community.

Which care products are recommended specifically for BILLY wood surfaces?Hey, it’s great that you want to take such good care of your furniture! 🙂 I would definitely recommend using a mild wood care oil or a special maintenance wax for veneered furniture.
Very important: Avoid harsh cleaning agents! They can damage the veneer. I’ve had very good results with linseed oil-based oils – they absorb well, provide moisture, and protect against drying out. Just apply regularly, don’t overdo it, and your Billy shelves will look great!
Don’t get discouraged; a little care really makes a big difference!

Therefore, oils or waxes are often unnecessary and can, in the worst case, leave unpleasant residues. For cleaning, a slightly damp cloth with mild soap or a cleaner specifically designed for coated furniture is usually sufficient.
To preserve the surface: avoid harsh chemicals, standing water, and direct sunlight. This will help protect the surface over time.
I agree with PIDAN that most BILLY wood surfaces have a durable melamine coating that does not require additional oiling or waxing.
For maintenance, I recommend regularly wiping with a soft, damp cloth and using a mild detergent if needed. Important note: avoid abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals to prevent scratches or dull spots.
If you are looking for a light polish, there are certain furniture polishes designed specifically for coated surfaces – these tend to leave a protective layer rather than the kind of care treatment you get with solid wood.
If you want to preserve the natural wood feel, a separate solid wood piece of furniture might be a better choice for oiled care.
How often do you clean it? And which products have you tried so far?

So far, I only clean with a slightly damp cloth and a mild detergent (without alcohol or solvents), but occasionally I notice areas that look a bit dull or unevenly shiny.
In that case, would it be advisable to treat these spots with polish, or is it better to avoid it altogether?
I want to minimize any risks, but I also think the surface naturally wears down with daily use.

I want to take as few risks as possible, but I think the surface will suffer from daily use anyway. It’s actually a bit paradoxical that people constantly look for care products for a surface that, in fact, doesn’t require much maintenance.
The melamine coating is durable precisely because it is a protective plastic layer. Oiling or polishing doesn’t affect the core material and might even cause problems instead.
I’ve also noticed that many who insist on using “natural wood” products for maintenance often cause more harm. Sometimes it’s best to accept the surface as it is and treat it as a functional object rather than a work of art.
Of course, if you want to improve the condition, try a very gentle furniture polish designed specifically for plastic surfaces. But many recommend just dusting regularly and avoiding cleaning with too much water.
