Hello everyone, I am currently planning to redesign my living room and want to use IKEA Billy bookcases for this. However, I noticed that there are many variations and sizes available. My question is: which BILLY bookcases are especially suitable for a living room? I am mainly thinking about stability for books and decor, as well as appearance and build quality. Are there models that combine well, or any tips for matching color options? I would also appreciate recommendations for additional furniture like back panels or doors that fit well in a living room. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!
Hey, I still think the BILLY shelves are pretty great! 🙂 For the living room, you can start well with the 80cm (31.5 inches) wide shelves, add a few doors, and if you like, include some lighting – tada, everything instantly feels much more homely. And if anyone associates it with the typical Billy book combination, just work with plants and decorations, and the design will work out! 😉

Doors are great, but I have also practiced not decorating too much – sometimes less is more. If you want to use BILLY shelves but don’t feel like adding too many doors, white back panels can help give a minimalist but tidy appearance.

Living rooms especially benefit from well-placed color and decorative accents. For example, I’ve scattered small colorful plant pots on the shelves and placed a few vintage books in between. That way, the BILLY shelf no longer looks like a standard piece of furniture but more like a unique statement. 🙂
