ᐅ When moving, the KALLAX inserts tend to come apart – does this happen to you too?

Hello everyone,

I noticed during my recent move that the inserts of my IKEA KALLAX shelves shifted quite a bit during transport. Specifically, the small cube inserts that fit into the compartments tend to move slightly despite their precise fit when the shelf is moved or carried. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

I’m interested to know if this issue also occurs for you when the KALLAX inserts are left inside the compartments during a move or significant movement. Or could it be related to how the shelves are transported?

I would like to avoid the inserts getting completely mixed up or damaged during the next move. Any tips on whether it’s better to remove them entirely or how to secure them would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to your opinions and experiences!

Yes, I am very familiar with this issue. The KALLAX inserts fit well, but they are not secured in place. When moving or relocating, they tend to shift, especially if the shelves are carried or tilted.

I recommend removing the inserts completely before transport and storing them separately and securely. Alternatively, you can use hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro) or double-sided tape to secure them, but these may leave residues.

In general, it is better to detach the inserts to fully prevent damage or shifting during a move.

That’s exactly how I do it as well. It’s much easier to store everything and put it back later.

It’s interesting that most recommendations here suggest completely removing the inserts.

However, I’m genuinely curious if there are more practical methods available, especially for people who have limited time or space during a move to store the inserts separately.

– you really have to be careful with that. Tape can cause permanent damage, and while Velcro may increase friction, it can be complicated to apply.

Are there any experiences regarding which alternative fastening methods are the most effective and gentlest on the inserts?

Also, how much do the inserts actually shift during normal transport—meaning when you’re not carrying them, but perhaps moving them with furniture dollies or similar? Is the shifting without any fastening already a significant issue in those cases?
