What would you do differently in your next house build? (For us, there won’t be a next time, but I think beginners can benefit from our experience.) Please stay on topic and avoid lengthy discussions (feel free to start a new thread for that)!

I’ll start:
* Electrician: A network connection in every room isn’t necessary; nowadays everyone uses Wi-Fi, which is perfectly sufficient.
* Us: OK, then we’ll install one network connection per floor where the TV is going, you have to save somewhere.
* Result: At the network outlet, we get 50 Mbit/s, Wi-Fi with a repeater around 20, sometimes only about 5, Powerline adapters around 25. It’s enough for me, but the kids are disappointed. I followed all the usual advice.

Yep, that's how it will be.

A lot is assumed when creating star wiring and/or bus wiring using existing empty conduits. That is probably the driest theory.

Empty conduits are especially useful for flexibility in network topology. By the way, a good empty conduit is called that because it is empty. Although some people use the term for conduits that are already occupied from the start and into which it is difficult to pull additional cables. For every planned conduit, there should be an additional truly empty one installed; otherwise, the purpose has not been understood. Installing a conduit only to prevent the cable sheath from direct contact with the plaster is nonsense.

Great idea for this thread!

Just a quick question.

I’m not at the window stage yet, but I thought that standard protection would be enough since I’m getting an alarm system anyway.

Is that a wrong assumption? You can open any window if you want, especially the experts. And if it opens, the alarm goes off. So, wouldn’t a basic window be sufficient?

I always thought:
Better standard windows with an alarm

Instead of no alarm and the most secure windows.

When planning conduits, also plan pull boxes.

Suppose you are known to be very wealthy. The Picasso in your guest bathroom is just as authentic as the Kandinsky in the bedroom, with the safe opening at 12:34 behind which your watch collection is stored. Then you belong to the select few targeted by real professionals rather than random thieves. Unfortunately, you live in the middle of nowhere; on roads free of snow, the patrol car arrives just 38 minutes after the alarm sounds at your door. How much fear do you think the experts have that one of your neighbors might post their stolen license plate on Facebook? – Go back to square one, don’t collect four thousand marks.

And if I don’t have any Kandinsky paintings, except as poster prints, if my wife doesn’t have Chinese vases or diamond jewelry, if the TV is 10 years old and the furniture is from the moose, then you don’t need RC insurance or special windows or an alarm system. The carpenter who helped us during the final inspection of the house put it perfectly: The window handles can also be locked. That costs extra. I wouldn’t take it—you just end up losing the keys... and anyone who wants to get in will get in anyway.
