Hello everyone, I am currently facing the task of making minor repairs to my Malm furniture. Before I get started, I want to make sure I have the right tools on hand to properly fix issues like worn screws, loose connectors, or small chips.

My question to the community is: Which tools are especially useful or necessary for repairing common Malm furniture? Are there specific screwdrivers, adhesives, or other aids that have proven effective? How do you approach situations such as a detached aluminum rail or a loose screw joint?

An overview of useful tools, from basic hand tools to precision tools, would be great, as well as any tips on potential pitfalls or special features of Malm furniture. Thanks in advance!

Hello Ceman,

for repairs on Malm furniture, I recommend a combination of basic tools and a few specialized aids. Malm furniture is generally made with inexpensive materials that can be quite thin, so it’s important to work carefully to avoid causing further damage.

First, you should have a set of Phillips and flathead screwdrivers in various sizes, as many of the connections use different types and sizes of screws. A set of hex keys (Allen wrenches) is also often useful because some fasteners are based on these.

If screws or fittings become loose, use threadlocker (e.g., medium-strength threadlocker) to keep the connections secure. For loose joints, wood glue or a special adhesive suitable for particleboard can help as well.

If the aluminum tracks have come loose, a small flathead screwdriver can be used carefully to adjust or rehang them. For tightening or replacing screws, a torque wrench is usually not necessary— a handy screwdriver is enough to avoid overtightening.

Basically, a good-quality screwdriver set, some reliable wood glue, a few clamps, and possibly some fine sandpaper are sufficient for minor repairs. You might also consider getting a small cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque settings, which makes things easier if you do repairs frequently.

Looking forward to what others might add!

Best regards,

In addition to FeAndreas1, I would like to emphasize that with Malm furniture, it is often the connections made with dowels and cam locks that cause problems. A set of suitable Allen and Phillips screwdrivers is essential here, so you can easily loosen and retighten the connections.

I also recommend a high-quality all-purpose wood glue specifically designed for chipboard. Many DIY store products are inexpensive, but not every adhesive holds equally well on Malm’s special construction. Professional wood glue (photovoltaic system-based) usually works better on the particleboard surfaces.

For fine adjustments or when a dowel connection is tight, a rubber mallet can be useful to fit parts precisely without causing damage.

That’s a good tip, which I can confirm. Just be careful to avoid any deformation.

I would also recommend keeping spare parts on hand for repeated repairs, as it is sometimes more cost-effective to replace damaged fittings completely rather than constantly repairing them.

In short: screwdrivers (Phillips and Allen), wood glue, clamps, rubber mallet. This is usually enough for Malm. If rails are involved, a small flathead screwdriver is helpful.

Hello Ceman,

I would like to follow up on your original question because I have also done some minor repairs on Malm furniture myself.

In addition to the tools mentioned, such as screwdrivers in various sizes, Allen wrenches, and hobby-grade wood glue, I always found it helpful to have a few clamps on hand. When gluing particleboard, applying pressure often results in a stronger bond.

Important: Always make sure the screwdriver matches the screw head size exactly. I have ruined several screw heads by using the wrong tool, which made the repair unnecessarily difficult.

For loose connections, it is also worth checking the screws before tightening to see if they may already be stripped. In some cases, you can buy replacement screws online at a reasonable price in the appropriate length to restore the furniture’s stability completely.

I fully agree with that.

Good luck with your repairs!
