ᐅ What to do if Malm furniture is warped?

Hello everyone, about a year ago, I bought a Malm bed from IKEA, and recently I noticed that the furniture surfaces and some drawers have warped. Since I know that Malm is mainly made of particleboard with a veneer finish, I suspect that moisture or temperature fluctuations may have caused this. My question is: What specific steps can I take to repair or at least improve a warped Malm piece without damaging its appearance? Are there any proven methods for restoring it or preventing further damage? I would appreciate any advice based on experience or solid knowledge.

Remove the drawers, then apply heavy furniture on the warped surfaces to 'force' them back into shape

This approach is intuitively understandable. However, it is questionable how sustainable such a measure is with particleboard furniture, since the material structure can already be weakened.

That is an interesting point. But how exactly should the moisture be controlled here? Too much water can cause the particleboard to swell and be permanently damaged. Are there any established rules of thumb or practical experience to consider?

I question this because improper application could make the damage worse.

I would like to add that when dealing with furniture made from thinner particleboard, it is generally worth considering whether repairs are worthwhile at all. Restoring the original shape is often only a short-term solution.

Some pieces of furniture release stresses when they warp, which cannot be completely reversed, especially if moisture has already penetrated deeply into the board.

The best practice is to use only slightly damp cloths rather than wet ones. It is better to work in small areas repeatedly instead of wetting the entire surface at once.

In summary:

- Check for warping (understand immediate causes)
- Store furniture in a stable, moderately humid room
- Use light weighting to reduce warping
- Apply moisture only sparingly
- Contact customer service in case of significant damage

Repair attempts can be risky and often take more time than replacement.

Finally, an important tip:

Chipboard panels with foil coatings are especially sensitive at the edges, as the material is usually unprotected there. Fully enclosing the edges with special edge protectors or acrylic can reduce the risk of moisture absorption.

If drawers have already warped, adjustable metal slides can sometimes help. Also, check whether the screws are still properly tightened; loose screws can promote deformation.

If a claim for material defects is not possible, replacement is often the best solution, as repairs are frequently only temporary.
