Hello everyone, about a year ago, I bought a Malm bed from IKEA, and recently I noticed that the furniture surfaces and some drawers have warped. Since I know that Malm is mainly made of particleboard with a veneer finish, I suspect that moisture or temperature fluctuations may have caused this. My question is: What specific steps can I take to repair or at least improve a warped Malm piece without damaging its appearance? Are there any proven methods for restoring it or preventing further damage? I would appreciate any advice based on experience or solid knowledge.

First of all, you need to assess how warped the furniture actually is – whether it involves only surface distortions or if the entire structural frame is affected.

This assumption is basically correct, but you should also keep in mind that the laminate or veneer coating itself barely swells; it is the particleboard material that does.

Only if moisture penetrates deeply into the board does deformation occur. Therefore, my counter-question is: What is the humidity level in your living space, and is the furniture possibly placed near a window or a radiator? This can provide important clues before any repair measures make sense.

Basically, there are two main types of warping issues: 1) warping caused by moisture, and 2) warping caused by material stress or processing.

For moisture-related warping, I recommend keeping the affected area dry initially and storing it in a room with controlled humidity of around 40-55%. This is important because wood-based materials can continue to expand or warp otherwise.

If warping is already visible, you can try to gently reshape the panel by placing weights on it and occasionally lightly moistening it under plastic sheeting – but be careful, too much moisture can cause permanent damage to the panel.

If the warping is extensive and severe, some retailers, including IKEA, may offer warranty or replacement options, especially if the furniture is not older than 2 years.

Hello there! 🙂 I can confirm that Malm can sometimes be a bit of a diva when it comes to moisture. A trick that helped me before is to take the drawers out and place heavy objects on the slanted surfaces to ‘force’ the furniture back into shape—without turning the room into a moisture sauna.

In between, try to maintain balanced humidity levels in the room, not too dry and not like a steam sauna. 🙂 With some patience, you might start seeing results. So patience is definitely a good friend here!

But be careful not to overdo it—otherwise, it’s soon “Malm temperamental” ;-)

I would first check for surface damage on the furniture. If the particleboard is warped, replacement is the only solution.

In short: try placing the furniture on a flat surface and weigh it down to reduce minor warping. Otherwise: replacement.

A more detailed explanation:

If the furniture is Malm furniture made from particleboard, the cause of warping is usually uneven swelling or shrinking of the wood fibers due to moisture exposure or long-term stress.

A systematic approach would be roughly as follows:

1. First, check if the surface is damaged or permeable to moisture – this is often seen as creases or open edges on foil or edge banding.

2. Thoroughly clean the furniture, keep it dry, and optimize the room climate. If the piece of furniture stands directly on the floor, create a slight elevation to prevent moisture from the floor affecting it.

3. For minor warping, slight improvements can often be achieved by weighting the furniture (e.g., with heavy books or weights) over several days. It is important to distribute the weight evenly and use a flat surface.

4. For more severe warping, you can try carefully moistening the affected side (e.g., with a damp cloth) to soften the wood fibers slightly, then mechanically adjust the furniture. Caution is necessary here to avoid damaging the foil surface.

5. If there is no improvement, filing a complaint with IKEA is quite reasonable – especially if the furniture is still within the warranty period.

I would be interested to know in which room the furniture is placed, how large the warp is, and whether the foil surfaces already have cracks. This information would help in assessing the situation.
