ᐅ What special features do Billy shelves from other countries have?

LidraI am particularly interested in whether there are any specific features or differences in the Billy bookcases sold in different countries beyond just language variations. For example, are there differences in dimensions, materials, manufacturing techniques, or country-specific design changes? It would also be interesting to know if the usage or options for extensions vary significantly depending on the country, perhaps due to regional regulations or cultural preferences. Does anyone here have reliable information based on international experience or specialized sources?
Differences in Billy bookshelves across countries do exist, but they are usually subtle. The dimensions remain mostly consistent since IKEA prefers standardized production worldwide. A major factor, however, is the materials: in especially humid or hot regions, IKEA often uses a special coating or a slightly different type of wood to improve durability and stability. Additionally, country-specific safety requirements can influence the design, for example concerning back panels or wall fastening options.
This is exactly correct, as linguistic adjustments are only one aspect, but there are variations in technical specifications and workmanship, which are usually chosen for practical reasons.

I can confirm this from personal experience. When I visited Japan years ago, I noticed that the Billy shelves there have a very smooth surface, which makes them easier to clean. This is probably due to the higher humidity and different living habits in Japan. Additionally, the shelves in Japan often seem to be offered at a slightly lower height, as the ceilings are usually lower than in Europe.
Another point is the adaptation in accessories: In some countries, such as the USA, additional modules like drawers or doors that are specifically tailored to local living styles are more heavily marketed or have different dimensions compared to those available here.
From my perspective, this is extremely important, as child-safe wall fittings are often required in places like the USA.

Super interesting topic! 🙂 I experienced in France that Billy shelves are sometimes offered there in slightly different shades – somewhat warmer wood tones compared to the usual white or birch we have. Not huge differences, but nice for those who like a bit of variety.
Also, in some southern countries, the shelves are sometimes made extra UV-resistant because they are often placed in rooms with a lot of sunlight. For anyone who wants to put a Billy shelf near a window or in bright lofts.
That’s a cool aspect I wasn’t aware of at all. Maybe these options will expand here soon too!

In China, the Billy shelves often come with reinforced shelves. This is because they sometimes store heavier items there. The packaging is also often different to better withstand the transportation routes.
Yes, especially regarding wall mounting, there are differences. Sometimes special wall plugs are included that better suit the local construction style.
