Hello everyone, I have a specific question for experienced users of IKEA Hemnes furniture: What particular issues occur with Hemnes series furniture when exposed to high humidity over an extended period? I ask because I have noticed some of my Hemnes cabinets and shelves in a poorly ventilated room showing signs of moisture damage. I am especially interested in details about changes to the material, possible warping, or even mold growth, and how these aspects typically present themselves during everyday use under such conditions. Are there any experiences or technical insights describing whether the wooden surfaces swell, if the joints and fittings are affected, and how to prevent these problems? Thanks for your input!

How long have your Hemnes furniture pieces been in a humid environment? Are they exposed to direct water contact or just high humidity due to the indoor climate?

Thank you for your follow-up question! The furniture has been in a room for about a year that is not officially classified as a wet area, but where the humidity can rise to around 70 percent in winter due to insufficient heating and ventilation. There is no direct water contact. The furniture was completely dry and undamaged when it was set up.

I am concerned because I am now noticing swelling at the bottom edges and a slight moldy smell mainly behind and under the furniture.

Could modern surface sealants on Hemnes reduce the risk, or is this effect minimal with this series?

To my knowledge, Hemnes furniture is coated with a paint layer but still shows visible wood grain. Apparently, the surface finish is not enough to completely prevent moisture absorption.

Are there any specific suggestions on how to protect the furniture long term or alternatives for challenging indoor climates?

For the specific case described by Meosabri67, I would like to focus on prevention and treatment. Hemnes wooden furniture in damp environments can indeed be damaged if the conditions are not appropriate.

First, regarding practical protective measures:

- Reduce humidity: Using small electric dehumidifiers can help maintain the relative humidity below the critical threshold of 60%.

- Adjust furniture construction: It is advisable to place furniture such as cabinets away from the wall to allow air circulation. Additionally, placing plastic or felt pads under the legs minimizes contact with cold floors, which can promote condensation.

- Surface maintenance: Regular care with specialized wood care oils that penetrate deep into the pores and make the surface more flexible can reduce cracks and moisture penetration.

- Alternatives suitable for damp rooms: If the room has permanently high humidity, water-resistant furniture surfaces or other materials such as MDF with melamine coating are recommended instead of solid pine wood.

- Remove mold: If mold is already visible, it must be removed immediately using appropriate agents to stop further spread. After cleaning, the cause (moisture) should be addressed.

In summary, Hemnes is solid furniture, but like any solid wood product, it has its limits. The key to preventing damage is a combination of optimizing the indoor climate and targeted furniture maintenance.
