Since these shelves are made of painted wood-based panels, I’m wondering what kind of care and maintenance is needed to prevent long-term moisture damage or warping. Are there any specific cleaning tips, recommended protective measures, or possible surface treatments that help keep BILLY shelves functional and looking good in more humid environments?

BILLY shelves are generally only partially suitable for damp rooms, as they are made of particleboard with a melamine or foil coating that offers limited resistance to moisture. For damp rooms, I recommend the following care and measures:

This is a very important point! I would like to add a bit because many people underestimate the maintenance required. BILLY shelves, as mentioned, are not designed for high humidity, but with some care they can be used well:

- It is important not to expose the shelves to elevated humidity for hours at a time, so daily ventilation is necessary, especially in bathrooms without windows.
- Regularly remove dust and dirt, as they can retain moisture.
- Use mild household cleaning agents based on water, avoiding harsh solvents or abrasives, since these can damage the surfaces.
- Additionally, you can seal the back panels or edges with water-repellent lacquer. This helps to prevent swelling.

If anyone has had success using special sealants for wood-based materials in humid rooms, I would appreciate any tips.

Concise and clear: Do not clean BILLY shelves with water – a damp cloth is sufficient. Do not let puddles stand. If possible, additionally seal the edges. Regular ventilation is essential.
