Hello everyone,

I’m planning to repaint my IKEA Billy shelves and want to do it in the best possible way to achieve a durable and high-quality finish. Since the shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating, I’m wondering about the best approach to apply the paint evenly and permanently.

What preparatory steps are essential (e.g., sanding, priming)? Which type of paint (acrylic, paint pen, spray paint) works best for this kind of surface, and how durable is it?

I’m also interested in tips for handling the painting process, especially for the edges, which can often be a bit tricky to work on with the Billy shelves.

Thanks in advance for your helpful advice!

I would sand the surface first to improve paint adhesion. Then apply a primer, after which you can apply the paint of your choice. Acrylic paint works well, is easy to work with, and dries quickly.

When working with Billy shelves, it is important to know that the surface usually has a melamine coating, which is very smooth and hard. Simple sanding is not sufficient.

I recommend first lightly scuffing the surface with a fine abrasive pad or Scotch-Brite to improve adhesion without damaging the board. Then apply a bonding primer specifically designed for smooth surfaces, such as a 2K polyurethane primer.

After that, you can apply solid color or acrylic paint. Spray paint is ideal because it also allows you to reach the edges better and achieve a more even finish.

Important: Pay attention to the drying times and lightly sand between coats to ensure a smooth surface.

Very good approach so far – but I would like to address one step before sanding that is often underestimated: thorough cleaning. Oil residues, dust, or grease on the melamine surface can significantly reduce the adhesion of the paint.

Here is a step-by-step guide:
1. Thoroughly dust the shelf.
2. Wipe the surface with a grease-dissolving cleaner (e.g. denatured alcohol or a special latex paint degreaser), then allow it to dry completely.
3. Sand very finely (grit 240 to 320) or use a sanding pad to matte the surface, preparing it for mechanical adhesion.

Regarding priming: I recommend an acrylic-based adhesion promoter suitable for smooth, non-porous surfaces. Two-component (2K) systems are a bit more complex but provide the best durability.

As for the paint itself, I can add that a two-component polyurethane coating (2K) is significantly more resistant to scratches and wear than common acrylic paints. However, you should apply it in a well-ventilated area if possible.

The edges of the Billy shelf are made of thin material or covered with a plastic edge band. Here, I recommend painting with a fine brush or a small foam roller to avoid drips and apply relatively thin layers.

One more important note: spray paints are excellent for surfaces and edges and often provide a nice finish but can be harder to control precisely. So always spray in well-ventilated areas and maintain proper distance to avoid runs.

If you need further details about tools, paint manufacturers, or techniques, feel free to ask!

I also painted my Billy shelves last year and can say: patience is key. 🙂 It’s better to apply several thin coats of paint rather than one thick one. The paint tends to clump, especially on the edges.

Oh, and if you’re using spray paint, spray slightly at an angle to the edge to avoid uneven streaks.

That’s true, acrylic paint adhered very well for me, especially with proper priming beforehand.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide for those who prefer detailed instructions:

1. Disassemble the Billy shelf parts to ensure all surfaces can be treated evenly.
2. Thoroughly clean the surface with a silicone-free cleaner.
3. Gently sand the surface with 320-grit sandpaper or sanding fleece, making sure to sand evenly without damaging the surface.
4. For particleboard with a melamine coating, apply a special adhesion primer (e.g., Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3).
5. Allow the primer to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
6. Apply the paint in thin layers: When using spray paint, hold the can 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) away; when using a brush or roller, apply thin and even coats.
7. Lightly sand between layers with 400-grit sandpaper to remove any unevenness.
8. After the final coat, let the paint dry for at least 24 hours before reassembling the shelf.

Make sure to paint the edges thinly using good brush techniques, as thick paint layers can crack or peel easily.

If you need to choose a paint brand: products like Alkyton or comparable 2-component (2K) paints offer excellent results and durability.

If you prefer the spray paint option, I strongly recommend using respiratory protection and working outdoors or in very well-ventilated areas.
