Hello everyone,
I’m planning to repaint my IKEA Billy shelves and want to do it in the best possible way to achieve a durable and high-quality finish. Since the shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating, I’m wondering about the best approach to apply the paint evenly and permanently.
What preparatory steps are essential (e.g., sanding, priming)? Which type of paint (acrylic, paint pen, spray paint) works best for this kind of surface, and how durable is it?
I’m also interested in tips for handling the painting process, especially for the edges, which can often be a bit tricky to work on with the Billy shelves.
Thanks in advance for your helpful advice!

A good discussion here, thanks for all the tips.
At first, I was a bit apprehensive about sanding and priming because I was afraid of ruining the shelf. I found the edges with the plastic coating especially tricky.
That really helped me. Instead of the roller, I used a finer round brush, which led to fewer mistakes.
My personal recommendation: Take your time and don’t underestimate drying times. I rushed at the beginning and had to sand and repaint again. It’s frustrating, but part of the process 🙂

The edges of the Billy shelf are made of thin material or have a plastic edge. I recommend painting these with a fine brush or a small foam roller to avoid drips

Preparation work is always crucial. First clean, then sand lightly, followed by applying a primer, and finally the paint.
I always recommend acrylic or two-component (2K) paints, depending on how much effort you want to put in. Spray paint is good for the edges. Patience during drying is important.

Thank you very much for all the detailed answers and your patience with my questions!
In particular, the tips on cleaning before sanding and the use of a primer have given me new perspectives.
Can any of you share advice on alternative products or sources?
Also, I’m wondering if it makes sense to fully disassemble the shelf components before painting, or if treating just the back panel and easily reachable surfaces is sufficient.
It would be great if you could briefly share your opinion on this point.

Apply a special bonding primer (e.g., Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3) on particle boards with a melamine coating.
