Hello everyone, I am interested in creative and practical DIY ideas for customizing Ikea Brimnes furniture. Specifically, I am looking for ways to enhance the look and functionality of this series furniture through various, sometimes simple adjustments and additional materials, without the need for complex carpentry work. I am seeking suggestions for options such as surface treatments, replacing handles, combining with other materials, lighting solutions, or optimizing storage. Has anyone had experience or tips that can be done using standard tools? Thanks in advance!

Simply replacing the handles makes a big difference. Many swap the standard handles for leather ones or metal bands. A fresh coat of paint also works well, preferably chalk paint. For lighting, LED strips can be installed inside the cabinet.

I find this question very practical and important, as Ikea furniture often serves as a great base for customized design – especially the Brimnes series due to its clean lines. To enhance the appearance of the furniture, I recommend first feeling the surface: masking off, then sanding, and repainting or applying a new veneer can completely transform the piece. Another tip is to replace the handles, for example with wooden or leather ones, since they are easy to swap out and add a lot of character. For lighting, flexible LED strips that can be glued inside work very well. Functionally, storage space can be optimized with custom-made dividers, crates, or boxes. Some people attach magnetic chalkboard surfaces inside the doors for notes. If you have DIY skills, you could even screw in small additional shelves. What tools do you have available? Then I can offer more specific advice.

Hello, great question! I like to add a bit of "pep" to IKEA furniture without needing to become a pro. For example, on my Brimnes, I simply painted the white surfaces with washable chalkboard paint – perfect for changing lettering or quick notes.

That's true, the LEDs really make a difference. I also replaced the standard handles with small metal knobs, which gives a more high-quality feel. Just be sure to use screws of the correct length! And here’s a small tip: if you want to color a surface, try spray adhesive film instead of paint – it’s quicker and you have much better control.

I highly recommend magnetic chalkboards – they work great for me. This way, the furniture stays both personalized and practical. Have fun with your DIY!

I believe you don’t need to cover Ikea furniture with paint and similar treatments to make it interesting. Brimnes is minimalistic and cleverly designed, so it’s better to focus on smart functionality rather than visual extras. Instead of changing the handles, I would prefer designing clever interior features, such as writable compartments inside, smart drawer divisions, or motion-sensor lighting. All of these measures provide real added value in daily use.

Simply changing the color feels too superficial to me. Due to the modular construction, you can achieve much more with standard add-ons or custom-built inserts. What do you think? Does decorating furniture really make it more unique, or is it just unnecessary effort?
