SonaliHello everyone,
I recently bought a BILLY shelf with wood veneer from IKEA and want to enjoy it for a long time. Therefore, I am interested in the best way to care for these wood veneer shelves.
In particular, I am wondering how to clean the surface properly to avoid scratches and peeling of the veneer. Are there any specific cleaning products or care methods you would recommend for this type of wood veneer?
It would also be helpful to know how often such care should be done and if there are things to definitely avoid in order not to damage the veneer.
Thank you in advance for your answers!

A mild detergent in water is fine, followed by drying with a cloth.Exactly! And if you want to add a little shine now and then, treat your BILLY shelf with some furniture oil or a special wood care oil – it not only refreshes but also protects it. 😄
Oh, and please avoid abrasive cleaners or strong chemicals! They damage the veneer and make it dull. 🙂
A very good question, Sonali!
For BILLY shelves made of wood veneer, I recommend the following: For cleaning, a soft, slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or excessive water, as this can cause the veneer to swell or peel.
For maintenance, a furniture care product designed for lacquered or veneered wood is advisable, as it protects the surface without leaving a greasy residue. I personally use such a product about every one to two months.
Additionally, you should avoid direct sunlight, as UV exposure can fade the veneer. If scratches occur, gentle polishing with a soft cloth and a little furniture wax balm can sometimes help.
Have you set up your shelf properly so that no moisture can enter from below? This is also important for durability.

Always avoid harsh cleaning agents or excessive water, as the veneer can swell or peel off. Exactly. Technically, veneer is a thin layer of wood that is sensitive to moisture and mechanical stress.
For maintenance, a wax-based product is ideal because it seals the surface and fills in micro-scratches.
Regarding frequency: clean with a damp cloth as needed depending on dirt, and treat with wood oil or wax approximately every few months. Regularly remove dust, preferably with a soft, dry cloth.
What should definitely be avoided are abrasive cleaners, alcohol, or solvents, as they can damage the veneer. Standing water can also cause the wood to swell and the adhesive to fail.
