I’m currently thinking about how to best organize the half kitchen island, especially how much space to allocate for waste bins...

How do you handle waste? What types of waste do you store in the kitchen? For example, do you keep paper recycling and glass there as well? Do you collect any of it in the utility room?

We only have the utility room besides the kitchen. We don’t have a basement or garage.

You don’t want to keep too much waste in the kitchen or dedicate too much space to it. I would like to have a base cabinet with a waste system for organic and general waste. Then I thought of having another waste system under the sink for yellow bag recycling, paper recycling, and glass. But I’m not sure if paper recycling really belongs in the kitchen. I don’t want to have just one large trash bin in the kitchen.

What do you have installed under the sink?

Below the sink, there is a standard pull-out drawer at the bottom and a shorter one above, similar to those found in a bathroom vanity. You can store whatever you want in them, such as cleaning cloths, trash bags, supplies, cans...

Sounds interesting. It’s the first time I’m hearing about it.
No, it’s actually standard in high-end kitchens. You often don’t have a free hand when you want to throw something away...

Residual waste bins in our household have a capacity of 20 liters (5 gallons). There is another container of the same size for waste paper/recyclable paper. This container is emptied outdoors into the main bin when full. For recyclable plastics and packaging, we use a 10-liter (2.5 gallons) yellow bag, which is emptied into a large sack in the utility room. Any leaking cans or packaging are disposed of directly in the utility room. The same applies to glass recycling.

For our residual waste, we have a somewhat unconventional solution. However, as enthusiastic Denmark vacationers for almost 30 years, we use a Danish bag holder for 20-liter (5-gallon) bags installed under the sink.

We collect paper waste and recycling packaging (Green Dot) in designated containers in the pantry, and green waste goes into the bin or the compost bin in the garden.

8 liters (2 gallons) for the yellow sack? Wow, I probably need to switch more to reusable containers... that would likely be full after just one day for me.

Exactly. Two-person household and a narrow cabinet; a wider or deeper sorter wasn’t possible. It works perfectly! We do try to avoid plastic as much as possible, but not to the extreme extent of zero-waste stores or anything like that. So far, it fits well.
