I’m currently thinking about how to best organize the half kitchen island, especially how much space to allocate for waste bins...
How do you handle waste? What types of waste do you store in the kitchen? For example, do you keep paper recycling and glass there as well? Do you collect any of it in the utility room?
We only have the utility room besides the kitchen. We don’t have a basement or garage.
You don’t want to keep too much waste in the kitchen or dedicate too much space to it. I would like to have a base cabinet with a waste system for organic and general waste. Then I thought of having another waste system under the sink for yellow bag recycling, paper recycling, and glass. But I’m not sure if paper recycling really belongs in the kitchen. I don’t want to have just one large trash bin in the kitchen.

We have the Franke Cube 50 with 2x 8 l (waste and yellow) + 1x 14 l (paper) bins installed in the classic way under the sink. This is currently more than enough and requires taking out the trash only once a week for us. Organic or compostable waste is taken out immediately. It always depends on the amount of waste generated, but the system itself works quite well. Smaller bins also discourage leaving garbage sitting around for too long. Glass recycling goes into a Metro box in the pantry. It gets taken out when the beer is finished.
We will have a 30cm (12 inches) wide cabinet for waste. The top drawer will be for residual waste and plastics, the bottom drawer for paper and glass. Since we don’t have a storage room on the ground floor, everything will be collected in the kitchen. Organic waste will go directly into the bin or compost. Collecting it in the waste cabinet is too messy for me, as it tends to leak.
