I’m currently thinking about how to best organize the half kitchen island, especially how much space to allocate for waste bins...

How do you handle waste? What types of waste do you store in the kitchen? For example, do you keep paper recycling and glass there as well? Do you collect any of it in the utility room?

We only have the utility room besides the kitchen. We don’t have a basement or garage.

You don’t want to keep too much waste in the kitchen or dedicate too much space to it. I would like to have a base cabinet with a waste system for organic and general waste. Then I thought of having another waste system under the sink for yellow bag recycling, paper recycling, and glass. But I’m not sure if paper recycling really belongs in the kitchen. I don’t want to have just one large trash bin in the kitchen.

So, by the time a full yellow bag (120 liters (32 gallons)?) would be filled at my place, it starts to smell quite a bit. I have to take it out more often.

Our bin is a CURVER and I think it has a capacity of 50 or 60 liters (13 or 16 gallons), but in the tall shape it’s ideal for the yellow bag.

I don’t know how the bags are where you live, but here they seem to get thinner every year -.- With the lid, the trash is sealed pretty well and it stays out of direct sunlight at our place, but it never gets completely full because these super-thin bags would tear otherwise! Usually, the bin is only about 60% full when taken out. Wasteful, but due to odor and especially the bag’s strength, that’s the best we can do. Many neighbors also use two bags stacked inside each other or put other bags inside the yellow bag -.-

How often they tear becomes clear when you see the streets after trash collection.

There are systems available from Ninka, Hailo, Franke, and others. You can also simply place IKEA buckets inside the pull-out cabinet.

Example: Ninka

Cabinet widths of 30–60cm (12–24 inches) are common; the upper section is usually for residual and organic waste, while the lower section can be used for anything you prefer. Under the sink, there is a standard pull-out drawer.
