Hello forum,

Recently, the windows were installed in our new build. The internal sealing tapes were attached to an existing bitumen membrane instead of directly to the masonry. The bitumen membranes were there to protect the bricks from moisture. The window installer simply left these in place and installed the windows. Our site manager says this is not a big issue.

I am concerned that the airtightness may be compromised because both inside and outside, the sealing tapes rest on the bitumen membranes, creating a kind of gap between the tapes and the masonry. What is your opinion on this?

I am attaching some photos so you can see what I mean.

Is it still necessary to glue sealing tapes at all?

Regarding this question, I also find it questionable.

Layman’s opinion: This is not correct.

Tip: Find out which sealing tape was used. Then contact the manufacturer of the sealing tape for the installation instructions. Of course, you can also simply report the defect to your contractor and request remediation (in my opinion, this shouldn’t be a big issue at this point). Depending on their response, you can decide on the next steps.

The bitumen membrane does not appear to be adhered, so it definitely does not provide a seal against the masonry. In that case, he could have basically omitted the Siga tape in that area! Therefore, I find it hard to believe that this is professional work. I would at least expect the bitumen membrane to be cut at the frame and then a new tape to be applied (provided the substrate is properly prepared).

In the current state, I have serious doubts about the quality of the installation!

I would say: take it out again and reinstall it properly. At the current stage of construction, this won't be a big issue.

Exactly. Better to have a rejected complaint than one that was not submitted on time. Although I have little doubt that it was done properly, despite the initial impression.

That should be the demand. Currently, the market for subcontractors installing windows is unfortunately well stocked with unskilled workers and amateurs; precise operators are rare.
