Hello everyone, I am using an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit as an improvised dog crate for my medium-sized dog. The unit has a fixed back panel and is closed on two sides. Now I am wondering how to best clean the inside of the KALLAX without damaging the surfaces or compromising its stability. My dog sometimes has increased saliva flow and occasional urination, and I would also like to remove hardened dirt residues. Does anyone have experience with which cleaning agents and methods keep the inside of the KALLAX clean and hygienic over the long term? I want to avoid risks from harsh cleaners but still clean thoroughly. Thanks in advance for any helpful tips!
Hello Tanbu56, I’m happy to provide you with a clear step-by-step guide: 1. First, thoroughly vacuum to remove hair and loose dirt. 2. Then use lukewarm water with a mild cleaning agent (no bleach or ammonia). 3. A soft microfiber cloth or sponge is sufficient. Avoid scrubbing hard to prevent damaging the melamine coating. 4. For stubborn stains, you can use diluted vinegar water (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water); this has a mild disinfecting effect and helps dissolve deposits. 5. Finally, wipe well with clean water and dry thoroughly. Tip: Make sure the shelf is placed on a level surface to prevent moisture penetration. Good luck!

Putting cleaning aside: Isn’t that a bit makeshift, unhygienic, and possibly problematic in the long run?
If I’m honest, I would rather recommend a plastic crate with washable surfaces. It might not look as nice, but it’s more practical.
Just a thought.
Hello everyone, I would like to add that the importance and frequency of cleaning a KALLAX used as a dog crate ultimately depend a lot on the care of the dog. A well-trained dog that rarely urinates or drools in the crate makes maintenance easier.
For interior cleaning, I have had good experience using a mixture of lukewarm water, mild dish soap, and regular drying. If urine or other stubborn stains occur, a special enzymatic cleaner, typically used for pet-related stains on fabrics, can be helpful.
Be sure to wear gloves to avoid skin contact. Also, let the crate dry thoroughly afterward to prevent moisture from lingering during the day – otherwise, there is a higher risk of mold.
