Bauenaberwie10 Oct 2022 08:57Good morning,
I just received my wooden battens for the substructure of the rough decking. Unfortunately, they look somewhat “off.” I checked by feel, and they all seem dry. Now my question is: can I install them like this in the attic (cold attic), or should I sand them beforehand? Is this mold? Attached are a few photos.
Thanks!

It already looks like mold. Is it intended for indoor or outdoor use? Should there be insulation underneath?
If it’s for outdoor use without insulation, I would discard only the battens that look like the first one and wipe the rest with hydrogen peroxide.
I wouldn’t use something like this indoors.

I wouldn’t use something like this indoors. Yes, they are supposed to be used in the attic as a substructure for the rough-sawn boards. So, for indoor use. Hmm, the battens cost quite a bit of money, what should I do now? Can they be returned that easily? They were bought from a wholesaler.
If you are a wholesaler, did you purchase them with a business license? In that case, complain immediately. If you are an end consumer, you can theoretically cancel the order. I would first contact the seller to inform them that the goods are defective and ask how they intend to handle the situation...
I wouldn’t use moldy wood indoors either. Try discussing this with the supplier.

Bauenaberwie10 Oct 2022 15:39I just spoke with the wholesaler and confronted him about this. He didn't consider it mold, but he agreed to replace the boards for me. He showed me that the battens are stored outside, and about one-third of them are basically exposed to the weather without any rain protection. That’s why that one-third looked completely gray. The other two-thirds, on the other hand, looked like normal wood at least from the sides. He has now promised to take the wood from the “good” pile. Are there still any concerns about this?
