Hello everyone,

I have the following problem and would like to hear your opinion on it.

Last year, we built a house and a garage. The carpenter worked on the roofs of both buildings. Originally, an intermediate roof between the house and the garage was planned back then.

For various reasons, not caused by him, this was postponed to this year.

At that time, we were very satisfied with the work on the house and garage. Deadlines were met, communication was excellent, everything was perfect.

He came by in August to discuss the roof. He took notes and left. The offer price was delayed because the company that is supposed to build the trussed roof had forgotten to process the inquiry.

So he contacted them again, and after two weeks the price came through. The total price was acceptable to us, and I said, let’s go ahead and do it now.

Four weeks later, I reached out to ask how things were progressing with the roof so we could start planning. He replied that he would get back to me the next day. Of course, that never happened.

The following week, I tried calling him, but only reached his voicemail. We were on autumn break at the time, so I didn’t pursue it further.

Then on Monday, I called again, and he ended the call. Okay, maybe it was a bad time and he would call back. I sent him a message asking him to just get in touch.

Nothing happened.

The next day I tried calling again, and he ended the call once more.

Now I’m not sure what to do. On one hand, I’m getting tired of chasing him, but on the other hand, I want the roof done. We’re talking about an order volume of nearly $10,000.

No idea what I’ve done wrong. I mean, he is also supposed to build my patio roof and do some work for my parents in the same town.

... try to meet him in person and have a friendly conversation; maybe there is some misunderstanding somewhere.

Meeting him in person will be difficult. Although he lives just a few towns away, he is always on the construction site working. I didn’t really want to hang around in front of his house to catch him.

Too much going on. Private matter. No one knows the details for sure. I probably should have sent him another message asking why he stopped responding. You were satisfied with him and would like to arrange more projects with him. If he is not interested, a brief response would be appreciated so that you can try to find someone else.

I would definitely avoid loitering around his house. That’s creepy.

As I said, I definitely won’t show up in front of his house.

What puzzles me is this current behavior, as nothing happened before and we got along great.

I’ll give him another week or two of peace, then send a final message politely asking if we can still get back together.

I know this problem very well, amusingly enough also with a roofer. Mine is simply uncoordinated and overloaded with projects. The construction work is going so well at the moment that they can afford that. Anyway.

Solution: Call from a new phone number! Tradespeople always pick up then, since it could mean a new project.
