Everything on our end has been significantly delayed.
Originally, we planned to start construction in August, but for various reasons, that didn’t work out.
Now, we finally have the first site meeting with the construction manager scheduled for next week.
However, I have concerns about whether it makes sense to start building at this time of year. Maybe it would be better to wait until spring?
We are building a solid masonry house with a basement. My worry is that if the weather turns bad and the roof isn’t finished by Christmas, a lot of water and frost could affect the building materials over the winter.
What do you think? Should we start now or wait?
We are not under any time pressure.

Ok, for us, it’s only about the shell and roof. The windows probably won’t be installed this year. Measurements for the windows are being taken along the way – for example, once the ground floor is finished, measurements for the ground floor are taken, then once the upper floor is done, measurements for that floor are taken. But with a production time of about 4 to 6 weeks, installation will likely be in January/February... How do you manage your window scheduling?
Regardless, good luck and have fun! After about 10 months of planning, I can’t wait to see something made of brick and concrete [emoji6]

The window dimensions are already determined. I assume the masons will install the windows accordingly without needing to take additional measurements beforehand.

*smiles* – the measurement here does not refer to identifying the difference between the first and last plan, but rather the difference between the target and actual conditions. What falls in between are tolerances...

... this probably brought some amusement to those readers with construction experience ;-)

Laypersons often misunderstand the figures regularly found in floor plans that refer to such-and-such and a half centimeters as the manufacturing precision.

However, this is not the case. Such target dimensions result from planning grids, for example, the one-eighth meter modular system in structural building (like "88.5 cm (35 inches) = seven eighths of a meter plus 1 cm (0.4 inches) gap" for an interior door). In reality, however, masons are not watchmakers and do not place bricks with tweezers. A window with a target width of 263.5 cm (104 inches) can in fact measure 261 or 266 cm (103 or 105 inches). You surely would not want to balance this difference with excessive use of expanding foam. That is why the window installer prefers to take their own measurements once the masonry work is finished.

Yes, our contractor told me the same.
Windows will only be ordered once the openings are in place.
We started two weeks ago.

In our region of Middle Franconia, construction is also scheduled to start next week. Our shell builder does not anticipate any problems making the house weather-tight by Christmas. In the past, work typically began in autumn to allow the shell to dry out over the winter, which was intended to prevent cracks from forming later on.
