Hello everyone,
I’m facing a rather tricky question and am looking for advice, information, and good ideas—maybe someone can help me out.
In short, I’m searching for a good solution to cover and finish our new concrete staircase. Originally, the plan was to coat the staircase (which is already fully installed) with microcement. Long story short, due to various family and work-related reasons, we didn’t pay enough attention to the topic, were too trusting, and in the end, the stair builder gave us the wrong advice. Microcement is now off the table because our stair treads are 3cm (1¼ inches) lower than the final height, meaning I need a build-up height of 3cm (1¼ inches).
I’ve come up with several ideas and look forward to your opinions or experiences on them:
1. Building up the stairs with construction panels, then gluing laminate on top with F-profile trim. My opinion is that this will be hugely labor-intensive since the staircase is curved.
2. Tiling the stairs. I think I lack expertise in tiling—it seems more suited for advanced DIYers.
3. Building up the stairs with construction panels, then applying microcement on top. But will that adhere properly and last on the panels?
4. Gluing 3cm (1¼ inches) thick wooden stair treads. This seems like the most sensible solution, but what about the cost? And which wood type? Oak?
And yes, as is often the case in housebuilding, we also need to keep an eye on the budget.
Do you have any tips or feedback on this?
Thank you very much, Florian

So spontaneously, for me there is only the choice of compensating the 3cm (1.2 inches) difference with either wood or stone tiles. You also need to consider the transitions at the threshold and at the exit. How should it look there? Will the wood possibly start, and where does the flooring from the ground floor or upper floor end? Using construction panels for this is too improvised and you will definitely never be happy with the result.
