ToelkeHello everyone, I have a problem with a MALM chest of drawers and hope to find some tips for stabilizing it here. My MALM chest shows noticeable instability under some load, especially when placed on uneven floors. I suspect that the construction with the thin fiberboard without additional bracing is not ideal for frequent use or heavy loads. So, my specific question is: What proven tricks or measures can you recommend to effectively and permanently stabilize MALM furniture (whether a chest or a wardrobe)? Are there certain reinforcements, replacement parts, padding materials, or DIY techniques that have proven successful? A guide or experience report with as many concrete tips as possible would be great. Thanks in advance!

Which proven tips or methods can you recommend to effectively and permanently stabilize MALM furniture?I wonder if the wrong part is being skimped on – MALM isn’t exactly high-end furniture. Often, thin particleboard is used as the frame, which naturally makes it wobbly. Maybe attaching a few metal brackets to the back would help give the piece some real support. You screw them into the corners where normally there are only simple wooden dowels. This also protects against warping.
Also, place non-slip rubber or felt pads under the furniture’s feet, since the floor is often the problem, not the furniture itself. I’m not a fan of too much effort – a stabilization should be quick and not turn into a full carpentry project. But I do see the point, since “stable” here means that nothing will eventually wobble or creak.

Maybe it helps to add legs to the piece of furniture using some metal brackets on the back. Very good tip! 🙂 I often use these small metal braces or angle brackets that you can also find at hardware stores – they’re very cheap and really make a difference.
One more thing that many overlook: drawer slides can sometimes have some play, which makes the whole piece wobbly. You can add narrow strips of foam rubber or felt between the slide and the cabinet body to provide more stability.
And very straightforward: a thorough basic cleaning and checking if all screws are still properly tightened work wonders. It saves frustration and immediately improves the overall sturdiness.

What tried-and-tested tips or measures can you recommend to effectively and permanently stabilize MALM furniture? In my experience, the main cause of instability in MALM furniture is often the back panel, which is usually made of a thin hardboard.
I recommend reinforcing this back panel with an additional support. For example, a thin plywood sheet can be screwed onto the back with spacers. This installation prevents warping and significantly increases stability.
Furthermore, metal brackets in the corners are a classic solution and help to secure the corner joints, especially if the original dowels no longer hold properly.
Another option, particularly for uneven floors, is to install adjustable feet with threaded rods. These replace the standard feet and allow individual height adjustment.
In summary: strengthen the back panel, use metal brackets on the corner joints, and, if needed, install adjustable feet. After these measures, a MALM piece will stand much more stable.
