Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA and plan to install the doors, but I am concerned about how to best secure the doors to prevent them from falling off. Specifically, I want to be able to move the shelf occasionally or have it placed in a kitchen where opening and closing it can be a bit rough.

My question is: What practical, sturdy, and if possible reversible solutions are there to reliably fix the KALLAX doors to the unit so they don’t come off or fall out when opening or moving it?

I have thought about small latch locks but am unsure how that fits with the look and whether there are alternatives that are more discreet or even professional in appearance. I appreciate any tips, including specific product recommendations or installation advice!

Hello Rodrigo36,

To secure the KALLAX doors, I recommend magnetic door catches or simple small locks that can be installed between the door and the shelving frame. These magnetic catches are very discreet, easy to install, and reversible. Another option is so-called “push-lock” hinges or latches, similar to those used in furniture construction, which prevent the doors from opening by themselves.

If you care about aesthetics, it’s best to install the catches on the inside, where they are not visible from the outside. Built-in guides and pre-drilled holes on KALLAX make installation straightforward. For transport, you can also use self-adhesive door stoppers on the inside, which limit the opening angle and prevent the door from coming loose.

In summary: a combination of magnetic catch plus optional latch is often a good, reversible solution.

Hello Rodrigo36,

I understand your concern very well, as a discreet solution is often preferred. In addition to tra_nina’s suggestions, I would like to add that you might also consider IKEA’s own accessories for the KALLAX series, such as shelves with integrated clips or special door holders that improve stability.

For professional options, there are also hinges with built-in safety mechanisms. Although these require some effort to install, they reliably prevent the doors from falling out.

Additionally, attaching small, universal door stoppers inside the shelving unit can help keep the doors in place while moving them, without causing damage or leaving visible marks.

If you prefer a more advanced DIY approach, installing concealed stainless steel bolts that are operated from the inside can also be an elegant alternative.

I agree with that! Magnetic catches are like little superheroes in furniture 😊 They hold the doors securely without you having to worry about them falling off, and they’re almost invisible. If you want it to look a bit more “professional,” you might want to check out these push-to-open door handles, which are popular with KALLAX units and give a really clean finish.

One more tip: If you ever need to transport the shelving unit, you can temporarily use packaging tape on the inside edges, which can be removed without leaving residue. This way, you avoid doors coming loose during the move. Of course, this is a temporary fix but can be very practical sometimes. 🙂

Give it a try—it’s quick and has saved my day many times!

Installing magnetic locks works really well. When you move the doors, additional rubber buffers on the inside help. They prevent scratches and keep the doors in position.

A more professional method to secure them is to retrofit or replace the hinges. Special KALLAX-compatible hinges come with built-in removal protection and adjustable tension. This prevents the doors from falling off even with frequent use. Although it is somewhat more costly and requires some DIY skills, the investment is worthwhile in the long run.

The mentioned magnetic catches or latches are a good addition, but a sturdy hinge mechanism often completely solves this issue. Depending on the product chosen, all alternatives remain reversible.
