Hello everyone,

Since our house is taking a while, I’m spending some time thinking about my kitchen again.
It’s actually already fully planned, but I have fallen for the idea of adding a small second sink on the cooking island.
Does anyone have this and would like to share pictures and experiences?

I will probably extend the island by another 20 centimeters (8 inches), so there will be 80 centimeters (31 inches) of space to the left of the cooktop. The island’s width is just under 120 centimeters (47 inches), which I think should work fine.

The small basins are practical when you need to quickly rinse small items or pour out small amounts of liquid, for example with coffee machines.
For me, the question is how often I actually do this while cooking and whether I want to give up valuable counter space for it. I wouldn’t pour a pot of pasta into a small basin, for instance, and large knives or cutting boards can easily spread water over the whole surface around a small basin. Then you also need a towel or dishcloth nearby, which is handy but not always in your direct line of sight. Over the next few days of cooking, I would ask myself whether a small second basin really makes the work easier or if it’s just the result of browsing too much on Pinterest. Want or need?

I always wonder how my fellow countrymen here in Australia can prepare a meal in large open kitchens when the cooktop is installed against the wall about 90% of the time. When I tell them that in Germany people apparently always have or need an audience while cooking, and that’s why the cooktop is on the island, they laugh and don’t understand.

Do you always cook just on the cooktop? Never use the oven, air fryer, steam cooker, thermal cooker, etc.?

When I cook on the cooktop, I always use a timer. I don’t stand there for minutes watching the pasta. I know exactly how long it takes for the water to boil with a timer, put in pasta and salt, start the timer, and then I’m off.

What would really bother me about this kitchen are the long distances. Walking many meters from the fridge to the sink, the spacing between the counters is very large, which ends up looking somewhat odd. The closest counter space to the fridge is about 150cm (60 inches) away on the island or under the window.

Where do you put groceries, for example those for the fridge? 80cm (31.5 inches) next to the cooktop for five people is not much, okay, there is more space behind the cooktop. A child could easily knock groceries onto the cooktop. I have a “bare island” measuring 2 x 1.2m (6.6 x 3.9 feet).

What is the purpose of the counter areas to the right and left of the sink, 1 x 1.6m (3.3 x 5.2 feet) and 1 x 2.2m (3.3 x 7.2 feet), if the main focus is actually the small (2.5m / 8.2 feet) island for five people? You probably won’t be able to prepare pizzas there for five people.

The line spacing is very large,

I agree with you!

and I’m gone.

Where to? What do you do with the time it takes to cook pasta for x minutes?

I don’t exactly watch the pasta while it cooks either, but I do season or prepare the sauce. You don’t cook things one after another, but rather simultaneously. While the pasta boils and the sauce simmers, the pecorino is grated and the white wine is tasted 🙂
