Hi community,

I wanted to share my upcoming project here, describe it, and occasionally provide updates. For me, as a way to get support in case anyone notices something, and for others who might be interested in following along.

Background: For several years now, I (25) and my girlfriend (24) have been living together in a small apartment in a rural area. We had often talked about moving to something bigger. However, alongside my job, I was also completing advanced training to become a master craftsman, so my time was quite limited. Now that this is finished, we can tackle the next goal.

Since I also want to continue managing the family farm (a small agricultural operation with some woodland, etc.), we are planning to extend and renovate my parents’ house. After thorough discussions weighing pros and cons, we decided to move forward with this plan together. Since we’re not married yet, I will handle all the financial matters but will involve her in every step.

My parents have been informed and are, of course, happy that things are progressing. The transfer of the farm is currently underway, and I can gradually begin the planning phase.

We will keep the entire upper floor (about 80m² (860 sq ft), but with sloping ceilings) and completely gut and redesign it (the roof is self-supporting, so all interior walls can be removed). In addition, we’re considering enlarging the space by adding a double garage with living space above.

Now we are looking for a good (and affordable) architect who can present options for the extension/renovation and provide a preliminary cost estimate so I can take it to the bank. Visiting show homes hasn’t been very helpful since we need to work within the existing conditions.

Until then...
Best regards,
Allsop

Hello,
how much longer are you planning until handover?
I would definitely go to the bank first and clarify the financial framework.

Model home exhibitions can still be helpful, though, to get a sense of room sizes and to gather ideas for "details." For example, a T-shaped layout in the bathroom requires more space than other options, which could be taken into account during planning if you really want something like that.

Hi Maria,

regarding the handover: everything is settled within the family so far.
We have now consulted with the farmers’ association about the farm transfer.
They are currently preparing a document based on our ideas.

I have also already spoken with my advisor at the bank.
We went through some financial figures to see what might be possible. Since I cannot yet accurately estimate the cost range I am dealing with, this was more of an initial outlook.

You are probably right about the show homes. We should have our own vision despite working with an architect, as they mainly implement what the clients want.
That’s why we will continue to gather information on this.
But we still have time.
The plan is for me to start gutting the floor this fall and then tackle the extension/renovation next year.

Hi Community,

I wanted to give a brief progress update, as things have started moving forward a bit.
After a long back and forth, we have now found an architect who we believe understands our preferences best.
The extension planned is a double garage with a boiler room and a wood chip storage bunker.
Above this, there will be a room of about 65m² (700 sq ft). For the roof, we have now chosen a staggered shed roof to allow as much natural light as possible into the room. If possible, we would like to furnish this space as a large combined living and dining area and have the roof structure exposed.
Since there will be a boiler room underneath and a chimney will be built for it, we also want to install a wood stove (panoramic fireplace or two-sided stove) in the living and dining room as a room divider.
We are now waiting for the architect to create a 3D plan so we can better visualize everything. Then we need to consider how to arrange the space with a dining table, seating area, etc., without it feeling empty.

Best regards,
Allsop
