Hello everyone,

We are currently planning our new build with approximately a 10cm (4 inch) roof overhang all around on a gable roof with a 35-degree pitch. This idea came about because we really like the look of a small overhang, and the construction company then suggested 10cm (4 inches) all around as a practical solution. Their argument was that this way, no additional waterproofing measures on the building envelope would be necessary, which would be the case with a "0cm" overhang. I understand that from a construction standpoint, a larger roof overhang makes more sense due to weathering of the facade and so on, but let's leave that aside for now.

Does anyone happen to have a similar roof overhang and some example pictures to share with us?

Old building with a roof overhang of just under 14cm (5.5 inches) but a 50-degree roof pitch – with insulation, it is almost reduced to zero.

In that case, you have to repaint the facade every 5 years because the coating runs down the facade indefinitely. It’s even worse if it’s an ETICS system without a ventilation layer, then you can watch the moss growing on the facade.
You can combine that with an undersized box gutter that overflows during every heavy rain, completing the poor workmanship.

It’s especially problematic if the system is an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) without a ventilation layer—you can literally watch the mold grow on the facade.
You can also combine this with an undersized box gutter that overflows during every heavy rainstorm—that’s when the construction defects are complete.

As I have already mentioned, I am aware of this. Thank you nevertheless for the well-intended advice I gather from your post. To ensure effective facade protection, what roof overhang would you recommend?

A proper roof overhang and effective drainage are already half the battle when it comes to building protection. For my town villa, I chose a roof overhang of 70 cm (28 inches) all around, which I think is a reasonable dimension. Of course, it depends on the height of the building. I have two full stories, and this is enough to prevent rain from reaching the threshold.

For our first house, there was no roof overhang; only the gutter extended beyond the wall. The roof pitch was 40 degrees. Despite heavy snowfall (Upper Bavaria), we had no issues. The new house will also have no roof overhang.
