Hello, we are currently planning a modern two-story city villa with a hip roof. The ridge height will be 9.06 meters (29.7 feet).
The roof pitch is 25 degrees, and currently a roof overhang of 50 cm (20 inches) is planned.
I’m not sure if a 50 cm (20 inch) roof overhang will look good, but the architect said it is definitely sufficient. She thinks larger overhangs tend to make the house look like a ski chalet in a winter resort...
What do you think is optimal? I find it quite difficult to imagine from the drawings, and when looking at finished houses, I’m always unsure which ones actually have a 50 cm (20 inch) overhang.
Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Good evening,

attached you will find a city villa with a 50cm (20 inches) roof overhang. From my perspective, your architect is correct.

Weberhaus has many sample photos with larger roof overhangs. It also looks quite good on an urban villa. Of course, the 50cm (20 inches) shown in Bauexperte’s picture also looks nice.

The larger the roof overhang, the better the facade is protected and the longer it maintains its appearance—especially on the north and east sides. I always prefer a larger rather than smaller roof overhang. In midsummer, this also casts shade over the south facade earlier, reducing how long it heats up.

An excessively large roof overhang can overwhelm the house.
And I think: the house in the photo from Bauexperte is very appealing

Happy Easter!

Nofret, Sebastian – that depends on the construction site.

Ypg – see Weberhaus. 100 cm (39 inches) is certainly not too much for a house of normal size. I don’t find the Bavarian style with a pitched roof and large overhangs bad either.

Regarding weather protection, 50 cm (20 inches) is definitely sufficient, and more is not necessarily better. Try googling images of algae growth on facades and compare.
